You spend £14k on a new bike model and then are quibling about a few quid for the price of a 6k service and expensive special Castrol oil that must be used

Agree with you on that one - why skimp on servicing?, it makes no sense.
If I had the time, the tools, the smart workshop, the computer diagnostics and the inclination I might do my own servicing and seek out the cheapest oil for the job - but I'd rather spend my time riding the bike - life is too short to faff about over a couple of quid and then having to possibly quibble about warranty claims because the servicing wasn't done in accordance to BMW's requirements
