600 mile service costs

Hi,
what would you expect to pay for the first 600mile run in service on a 1200 Adventure at the dealer where you purchased the bike from.

Today they have charged me £211 inc vat.

Last time I brought a new bike the labour charge was free and the cost was around £95 inc vat, this was March 2012 same bike.
Have I been dun.

Yep

I was charged £180 by Benhams & that was overpriced, most people who use Clarks, Rubery are charged the cost of the Oil, £40, nobrainer where my custom will be going in future.

Yup....

If I bought a new BMW, and 600 miles later it needed over 200 quids worth of work, then I would feel shafted.

Glorified oil change.....IMHO.

First service 600 miles It should be free! It just a part off running in the engine , there is nothing they can do to the bike apart from a quick start and checking the engine oil

Asked BMW Dalkeith for a rough price for 600 mile service ( oil change ) on the new WC GS. Their answer £180 -- £200

Yep thought as much Benhams in Wolvo to big to care.

I have used Clarks many times before excellent service, they only charged me for oils, filter and O-rings.

Why do they do it when its obvious you'll take your custom elsewhere in future.

Got my new GSA from Rainbow, and as part of deal I asked for first service to be free,and they did. Cant knock em did me proud. Will use them again.

The key is to haggle when spending 15k

As some have intimated above - you don't get if you don't ask. I would go further and simply tell the dealer you will not be paying for the running in service! But there's no point in doing it after you've paid for the bike! If you're going to spend £15k without working out what sweeteners you could get on the deal and 'asking' for them as a condition of parting with your dosh then you pretty much deserve everything you get (charged)!

And I would apply that philosophy to every significant purchase. It's not about screwing the vendors - just reaching a deal where everyone is happy with the outcome. Do your research properly, decide on a top and bottom 'acceptable outcome' and if you can't cut a deal betwen those parameters walk away. There are loads of places you can buy stuff!

Oh - and of course I didn't pay for the 600 mile service. That would be just daft!

If you use genuine BMW parts, recommended oil ...................they can't stop you

Has to be done by someone competent and VAT registered.

Still £100 is sounds like lots off money to be charged for something that it should be part off the deal ! There is no other automotive trading company that charges you for running in just like major service ! Some people pays £150 for annual service
