6000 mile service.....

Have a ride across to Alan Jefferies ,they are open .Can also get yourself a cappucicno/latte while your waiting :P

Apparently Bowker won;t let you "onsite" you have to socially-distance and not enter the premises...! :(
No Latte for me

Had my 1st annual service done at Jeffries (Shipley) last week £217. Engine oil and filter, brake fluid change, rear brake pedal travel was becoming excessive. They changed my battery (it was sometimes a bit lazy cranking from hot but always ok from cold ?) I think it's an uprated one
they've fitted now, hope it's not a Lithium cos my CTEK battery tender only does 'normal' batteries. It's also going back in a few weeks time for the replacement of left hand switch assy due to the indicator switch not always working correctly, it occasionally crunches when indicating right but always ok left
They are also doing the latest software update which will be
021:104:020 I believe. Whilst waiting in the dealership (suitably socially distanced of course) they sent me a video/ commentary via messenger to my phone from the technician working on my bike stating : tyre depth, brake pad thickness, disc wear, suspension condition etc.
I have 2 dealerships closer (Manchester and Preston) but Jeffries beat them on price + the 600 mile FOC when the bike was ordered new. Simon the sales manager is always friendly and interested in how things are going. Couldn't recommend them enough. .

Out of interest Bill, what did the 6k service cost ? I’m keen to get any software updates that may be available when it’s serviced so I’ll try and get something booked tomorrow......

Had mine serviced today at Wollaston Northampton, £242.00 all in. No mention of a software update, what is it exactly?

Mine is now booked in for Tuesday (the 2nd) so I'm hoping that they don't take the piss with the pricing, given that £220-240 seems to be the average on here. That said, I don't expect to see much change from £300 from the garage...

You can do it yourself for roughly £50 to £80 depending on what fluids you buy. Just save your receipts and perhaps take a few photos with your phone as proof of the work done. Benefits are (1) You know the work has been done. (2) You save time, and its done at your convenience. ( 3 ) You learn about your bike. (4) You save some money to spend on farkles and trips. (5) I find it enjoyable and satisfying working on my bike, you may not.

I know a few of you are waiting for software updates, so that will have to be done at the dealers.......:thumb

I do definitely enjoy working on my bike and car but I'm worried about the warranty and BMW trying to wriggle out of anything in the future. If I'm reading correct, bikes are not given the same leeway as cars for work being carried out by non-dealers, even with the same consumables. I could be wrong and I would be more than happy to do it myself if I can definitely keep my warranty.

It's covered here...

Why is there such neurosis around Main dealers not carrying out the work paid for?

Surely this is an urban myth or is there proof?

I know of three cars, that had not had work carried out, even though it had been charged for and was part of that annual service.

On a bike at a main dealer, only once but it involved a young and inexperienced lady.

Not only did they damage her bike and fail to tell her, not complete the service correctly but overcharged her for parts too, and the final bit was fitting an unmatched pair of tyres, one of which was the wrong way round.

Ive had varying degrees of customer experience...……….

Cotswold...………. Tip Top

Others closer to me...………. Very Poor on recall and just a piss poor attitude towards customers generally in my experience. I went to collect a bike once and no prep had been done whatsoever, pack of fags in the little cubby hole on a 12 RT.

Tried to blag me, It wasn't MOT, then suddenly a certificate was produced.

If I get shafted...……….. I move on

I not saying all are bad, but they most certainly aren't all good.

Not all dealerships are the same. The Motorrad dealer that I bought my bike from new in 2015, never so much as offered me a cup of coffee, despite me spending over 20,000 Euros. when I asked where I can get a coffee, I was directed to the nearest cafe about a 10 minuets walk away, this was in Spain, as there are no dealers in Gib. They serviced my bike for the first 2 years because of the warranty, I had quick shift and hill start fitted retrospectively at the dealership, so spent a fair bit of dosh there. On the last service it went in running perfectly, but when I picked it up the quick shift would not work, so phoned the dealer back up, and was told to bring it in about a month later. I waited the month and took it back in, they kept it for a couple hours then rang me at the now familiar cafe to say come for your bike, on arrival I was told that it needed a new part, and it would be 500 Euros, despite me saying it was fine before the last service.

I like my bike to be tip top, so told them to order the parts and get it done. I decided there and then, that after the fix I would never go back.

I now do all my own servicing, it really is not difficult. The dealer has now gone out of business, I did not even get an email to say that they were closing down, nor did any other customers in Gib to the best of my knowledge, have any inclination of the closure, and I know most of them.

I too have found main dealers know little about the servicing of the bikes and without doubt you get charged for work they do not due. Last time mine was in for a service, I checked if they had stamped the book before I left, it had not been done. When I asked why they said I never gave them the book, I then asked the tech if he knew where the book was kept as per the manual on a GS apparently he did not! It was under the seat and plain to see, yet the service sheet said the bike had been plugged in for diagnostics, battery terminals checked etc, yet he failed to find the book sat on top of them??

Also had bits fall off on the way home after a service as they forgot to tighten the bolts! Had them cause major issues when they changed all the settings on the bike due to a knackered lamda sensor, rather than replace the sensor they set the bike up to run with a knackered one, came out blowing black smoke and told me all was good. That got sorted by an independent and the bike ran better than ever, I have no faith in them at all.

Not just BMW the main dealer for my other marque is no better, so much better to do it yourself or find a good independent, but unfortunately I know we are forced sometimes for software updates and plug in things etc, but generally in my experience the bike comes back worse than it went in.

Well, I had a call from them to confirm I was still coming in tomorrow (typical it's supposed to rain!) and at the same time I asked the price. I was very surprised to hear that it's been quoted at £183.47... If they actually end up charging me that I'll be pleasantly surprised!

Not just motorcycles where they skimp on servicing to get greater volumes through the workshops.

Here is a Kia Sportage which had its 2 year service where a brake fluid change was listed, itemised and charged for. The Dealership Manager stated that he was struggling to see from the photos whether or not my claims were correct: :banghead:

My 1250 GSA is due it’s 6000mile service soon. My local dealer is not even answering the phone at the moment so finding it difficult to get something sorted for the service. Does using an independent workshop invalidate the warranty ? Got a local guy who does a fantastic job on my other bikes and I’m thinking of letting him do the GSA......

Roy Gardner at Croston just did my 1250 rallye. No fuss and 165.00 all in. Roy always uses genuine parts and keeps good records of your bikes for future work. Only thing is that you need to occupy yourself whilst he does the work. I took a flask and a bite and strolled around town then had a picnic for one. You could always take Jasper for a walk I suppose.

An update on mine. Total cost was £165 inclusive of VAT, which I was more than surprised by. That included the usual filter / oil changes, inspection and the brake fluid being changed. I rode there trying out a new GoPro mounting and accidentally left it running so it caught 90% of the service so I at least know that everything was actually done for that cost. Took 45 minutes and I waited while it was being done so I can't complain at all about the service received this time, I'm actually impressed.
