800GS rear suspension

i wondered if anyone knew whether this looked sound or not, the smooth surface unpainted under the metal part and also the rough surface at the bottom of the spring itself, dont remember it looking like this on my last 800. this has only got 700 miles and just bought it.

any help would be appreciated

Bit of a long shot regarding the paint but does it look like its had heat on it? I followed a thread on Adventure bike rider for lowering the rear end about an inch or so which meant shaving a section of the spring off at the bottom and you had to heat the bottom coil with a blow torch to reshape the angle at the base. This obviously made a bit of a mess of the paint at the bottom of the spring. I repainted the whole thing in gloss but your pic looks familiar prior to painting.. AL
