thinking of having a 990 SMT - anyone know if there are any hard luggage options for the SMT (and if so, what they are) ?

not much info on the ktm forums I've searched in :nenau

anyone any views on what the SMT is like to live with ?

The KTM panniers available for the SMT are quite a bit smaller than the old 1150GS 'System panniers' - remember them? - but a similar shape but are not really that robust looking, they seem to be made of a plastic-backed fabric. They're not in any way comparable to the KTM Adventure panniers.

I take it you're referring to the softish KTM jobs that clip straight on the exhaust shields?

I gather that they can't even be fixed to the bike. They're also only waterproof with an inside liner.

Worst of all, they are only 11 litres capaicty each side. I don't know if that's with the liners in use or not, but doesn't make much difference - only slightly better than nowt at 11 litres...

I was wondering if anyone knew whether there was a fitting kit for the SMT to accept the H&B Gobi panniers which go on the 990 Adventure - or anything else that could be viewed as hard luggage. I've been on a UK H&B site, but it wasn't much use.

I was keen on one till i rode one, had a blast up the M1, a tootle round some A road and into town.
1st thing that entered my head was "this ain't a patch on a 1050 Tiger" it rode more like a bulky Tenere, its a tall SM so rides accordingly. Not for me.
If i had not had a Tiger / Tenere previously i would have been more impressed. Also £10k gets a hell of a GS / Tiger and change etc.
Now the RC8 :bow

oh poo - I'd forgotten about the Tiger. I rode the SMT and 990 Adventure back to back last summer and liked them both but neither blew me away. Rode a Tiger a few months ago and it was about the same. Real easy to ride and fast (compared to my 1100GS anyway :D ) Partly I like the idea that the SMT is a bit different / fairly rare , while also good fun, quick (for me) and fairly practical. I like the 1200 GS SE but can't get very excited about the non SE 1200 GS without wire wheels. I know I could spec one with wire wheels, but it seems a bit of a hassle (how lame is that) ? I can't keep track of all the different options on the 1200 Beemers and it takes the fun out of shpping around for me (boo hoo).

I'd prefer (for now at least) to buy from a dealer and get a trade in, even tho I know it makes more sense to sell my CBF 1000 privately.

The few 1200GS SEs in dealers are about 12 months old and between £10k to £10.5k, whereas I've stumbled upon a bit of a bargain SMT with 21 months warranty at £8k.

Hmmmm - them tigers are good value, oi reckon :rob :blast

My problem (well, one of them) is I don't know if I want a sh1te or a haircut, as me old man would say. Tomorrow I won't know if I want a haircut or a sh1te. :mmmm

The RC8 - too pointy/racy for me. Nowhere to put my pipe rack.

Them newish F800GSs in white look nice as well :pullface

i have the same dilema, sold 2 of mine in the last few weeks and am looking but don't know what for :D
A big trail thing of some description, i have had the Tenere / Tiger 955 and 1050 / 6 x GS's. Think that just leaves the Caponord :nenau
I try and wait for it to come to me but its like a fever searching the papers / net :pullface

Stelvio ? They look pretty good value 2nd hand and i imagine they sound nice. Someone told me (salesman?) they are built better in recent years because Aprilia is building them :nenau

What about one of those Benelli Amazonas jobbies? Rare as a rare thing - deffo stand out from the crowd on one of those. I think DK had a new one of those that sat there for 2 years or more. Might still be up a corner somewhere waiting for your speculative offer :eek

That KLE 1000 on here a bit back looked like a bargain. Maybe not what you would call a big trailie. Tried to persuade my mate to have that but he's sticking with his SV650

Multistrada?

So many bikes ........ good luck with the search :thumb2

I'd reccommend a Stelvio, I bought one last year and love it. I traded in my R1150GS for it. Nowt wrong with the GS, I'd had it for six years and fancied a change. I'd always wanted a Guzzi and the Stelvio fitted the bill for me.
The Stelvio handles very well, the brembo brakes are good with plenty of feel, it's big and comfy and goes a lot quicker than you think, fuel consumption is around 40 to 45 mpg, but the fuel tank only holds 18 litres. I've done 4500 miles so far it's been reliable, but the speedo sensor failed in heavy rain, that was replaced under warranty and the new one is now covered in clear silicone and has been ok since. I wouldn't want to take it off road as it's rather big, but then I thought my GS a too big as well, they just make great touring bikes IMHO.
I also have a Tiger 1050 which I'm very pleased with. If I were to replace it I'd consider a KTM 990SMT.

I have just bought an smt, had a 1050 tiger, excellent bike but i did not like the bulk, so wanted to like a gs but i can't, dont know why i just can't???

anyway, i have givi v46 on the smt and it does me fine:bounce1
