I see, I'm sorry - I just presumed that the filter could not be accessed with the guard fittedn

Dome headed Alan bolts, sorry.
Basically anything that is less likely to pick up crap or weeds from the undergrowth etc
Same with the four under the pan itself.......I'd put domed alans on there as well.....a flint bashing the corner off a hex bolt head can make them a mofo to undo

EDIT.....
That's even better......little chance of a countersunk flush bolt head getting mangled

On the 'ideal' wish list, the allan key size would be the most common for the model of bike.....prollt 6 mill?![]()

This or button head socket screws (dome shape) are the ideal answer however its a male thread which reaches down from the sump so I am kind of thinking that a recessed hole is the way to go as suggested by JayC
But with that said I can see a couple of examples where a good alternative works well too!

Mark, it wasn't pretty but it was certainly functional!
This is the bare one off item prior to painting and with the cutaway for the oil drain plug.
Note also the welded caps, counterbored on the underside for recessed fasteners.
The two 90* brackets with thru' bolt were for fastening to the front engine mount position to add the necessary strength to the raised section for the oil filter.
I would make certain to leave the left side raised to protect the pipes, though not too high.

Jay's looks the best I've seen so far, functional and strong and nicely executed
The others look a bit flimsy for 200kg of bike smashing down on them
After all, that's what a sumpguard is for, isn't it?
Otherwise it's just a 'stone deflector' and NOT a sumpguard

Mark, good to see the recessed fasteners
I used 4mm aluminium, plenty substantial for the purpose. You could dump the wheels and stunt surf down a cobbled high street again and again on 4mm plate 'cos it ain't gonna hole or dent very easily.
Regarding the rest of your guard, I still feel you have nowhere near enough protection. The headers are totally exposed!
Also, as I mentioned before, I would be inclined to raise the protection level along the right side to the same height, or just below the top run of the exhaust.
The front of the guard needs to be a wrap around design, meaning both sides and front are joined.

great idea to rope in the team for this one Mark,I know you will come up with a quality product.
I`m in!

???

The BMW sumpguard, as made for them by Touratech does the job great Mark, so something of a similar design .... nice and simple
BUT I do believe they no longer use the front mounting bracket to the two lugs on the front lower engine sump casting ..... these can break off quite easily, with possible disastrous consequences if the sump is holed

- If I can take it out and use the side build as the strength to support the front upstand I certainly will as what you are saying does make sense. Thank you.
Hi pal and thank you for your valued input, I hope you are well.
I`m also keen to keep my stuff reasonable priced - I can`t charge how long it actually takes, no one will buy it - how much does TT charge for their sump guard?

Hi Mark
I've been looking for a guard like this for some time - I don't want the full expedition spec, and this one looks perfect. If I did want the full expedition complete bottom engine case cover there are quite a few on the market.
Where I was first attracted to your products was the lightweight look of what you were doing for the big GS (that why I emailed you a few months ago to see if you were considering doing anything for F800/700/650 - and now you are - result!!)

I mostly want something to keep off stone chips, and protect the oil filter and spam tin.
I would have one of these off you tomorrow.....for the right price!! And most likely in 2mm stainless, please
Matt
I definitely would have the guard coming around the the headers along the bottom, i have been dismounted by a bike and a rock and had that part sit on me leg, didn't know i could wriggle so quickly.
