Hi all

My name's Adam and I have a '54 1150Adv. This site was suggested by a 1200Adv owning friend today after I experienced a little...ahem..."problem" this morning. I've been monitoring a clanking noise from the gearbox for a week or so. The same 1200 owning friend said the symptoms were common for 1150's and to keep an eye on it. Which I did.

This morning just after pulling away from my house the rear wheel locked in 3rd. I stopped and put it in neutral easily enough but now the clutch seems to not engage/disengage the gearbox. I have all gears (if the digi display is to be trusted) and it won't move when in gear.

I have read lots about Thrust Bearings, Gearbox Splines, etc today and I'm not expecting anybody to jump in an tell me exactly what the problem is, but, does the fact that the wheel locked help eliminate any issues and or highlight something specific. FYI the original noise was present on tick over and disappeared when the clutch was pulled in.

I hate that this is my first post, I would have introduced myself had I known about you guys! If anybody can offer an opinion I'd really appreciate it.

Input splines, probably. Busy weekend. :anger:

Thanks very much for the steer.

.

Forget what i said in the phone call - if the bike can't be pushed forward when in gear it's not the clutch splines.

If it's the clutch splines you can still push the bike when in gear as no drive is running through the gearbox.

In my uneducated opinion, the final drive is OK. It just seems the clutch is almost disconnected although it still has the same pressure at the lever? Is there anything that would stop the clutch engaging/dis-engaging?

Thanks Stolzy. It does sound quite a lot like that - apart from the burning clutch smell!

I need a more descriptive explanation of what is actually happening, and what you can and can't do, i.e. push it when in gear and the clutch out, start it and run it through the gears while on the stand etc etc ,

When my 11 gearbox had it's M94 bearing probs and was fixed y Steve Scriminger he said that the trouble with this problem is that if the bearings went really bad it would lock the box and so the rear wheel. Obviously the clutch would not unlock this.

The input spline wear probs seemed to be 1150 specific but I guess that a gearbox out and inspection is the only answer.

Good luck...

Sorry for the slow response and thank you for the suggestions!

Hi Steptoe

The gears engage fine (according to the indicator), if I drop it into first it cannot be pushed and pulling the clutch in has no effect, but will slip into neutral and roll normally. There is normal pressure at the lever. I haven't tried to run the gears whilst the back's in the air - I will try that tonight. Don't know if this has helped eliminate any possible causes?

Really? I thought that the gearbox seemed to be behaving normally - like engaging drive. Don't read that like I think I know more than you BTW!!

I'll have a go at driving on the stand tonight, guessing that would eliminate some more potentials?

If you can push the bike in neutral is isn't the shaft.

If you put it in gear and it can't be pushed, it points to the gearbox.

If it's in gear and it can't be pushed with the clutch pulled in, it points to the gearbox.

It sounds like the gear selector is working ok, but other parts of the gearbox have problems.

Have finally saved enough money to buy a second hand gearbox and will be trying to fit it this weekend. Thanks very much for the help and advice

Gearbox swapped. Problem solved. Thank you so much for the advice Steptoe
