A few questions

Firstly, fitted my Tobinators a few days ago, they do exactly what they say, stop the buffeting, but the wind noise on my 1200 is terrible, even with earplugs, and I have tried every combination of reach and angle and it doesn't ease it, is there an aftermarket screen that would reduce this, and are they compatible with the tobinators?

Secondly, fuel light on again at 108 miles, I seriously thought I would get more than that, as that was one of the reasons I sold my Boxer Cup, I was expecting 200 Miles from a tank on the GS, will it improve over time? (900 miles at the moment)

Lastly, lost two retaining nuts from my sump guard at speed on Friday, a week after it had come out of service, not impressed!!!

Im finding my fuel consumption is improving I was initially dissappointed. However, Im unsure if its due to a real change in consumption on running in (I've 2k miles now) or if Im actually filling it properly. The latter sounds daft but I found I can go on adding small amounts of fuel for ages.

My light is typically coming on anything form 140 to 180 (my personal record) although I find if its lowish miles when it comes on it sometimes goes off for a bit then comes back on. I dont tend to ride economicaly.

On the tobinators : I've got both standard and secdec screen. Use a Tour X mostly. On the std screen I had to set it up so the front lip almost pointed at me. Looks like a sports bike set up. Low speed pretty good , faster I went the better it felt.
With the secdem jobbie its set so that its spilling on top of the peak of the Tour x. At any speed I can ride with the visor open (95ish it gets a bit breezy) otherwise its a little bit better than std. Just play with the full range of movements one afternoon. Earplus always used

On the fuel consumption: With the panniers , in the non airbrake mode , I'll get 100 - 105 miles before the first bar disappears. thats at 80 + on the motorway. Spend an extra 5 mins filling it up by trickling it in the top couple of inches of filler.

On the Tobinators: not convinced. Yes they do reduce (ever so slightly) the buffeting, but only if I have the screen low enough to point the air flow right at me. V. noisy and uncomfortable on an all-day trip. Bigger screen, from NN, on the way.

Fuel consumption: for me, a combination of fast motorway and London commuting is getting 220 to a tank which means reserve light comes on at 175 miles. This is getting better as the bike loosens up (now 5k on the clock) but also as I take more time to fill the tank. I've pulled out the rubber neck thingy and this makes it easier but there is a more radical drilling fix which I won't do as it is guaranteed to end in tears for someone like me - a banker who knows nothing about the oily/hidden bits.

Having said that, 105 to reserve does sound very extreme. You have found 4th/5th/6th gears?

I'd be happy with just the wind-noise if I could get it. A good pair of earplugs and you should be OK with that. Tobinators are my next purchase.

As for fuel, if you do the mod, you can get a good 22ltr in. I've had 250miles out of a tank on a run and 200 round town. With pure commuting in london, the light comes on around 135miles, indicating 35 to-go. I think the economy of this bike is fantastic. My old CBR did about 30mpg or 110miles to EMPTY!!

Stu, 95 ish a bit breezy?, that sounds just the job, I can stand motorway speeds for about 1/2 hour before my neck give me grief, I would like to see your set up, I'm in St Albans as well!!

I have fitted a pair of tobinators to my 1200 GS this weekend. I have not yet had a chance to try them out. However I have just one question..

With the BMW screen adjustment in the highest position and the Tobinators in the third ripple up from the bottom - the bar protectors hit the screen on full lock, although not in the steering locked position.

Are my handlebars adjusted differently to other peoples?

Do other people's tobinators cause a screen hand guard interface collision at full lock?

I had Tobinators, which were an improvement, but changed to a Nippy Norman screen which is a BIG improvement ( without Tobinators).
As for when the reserve light comes on, that seems imaterial, the big question is how far do you get to a tank of fuel. I always get around 220 miles.

I have no wind blast problem, but like others who have done the internal tank filler neck mod(lift it out and drill a couple of 5mm holes-search for details)240 miles of mixed running is about the norm
