A Trip…

What a great write up - shame about the pictures, all I get is a sheet of black where a picture should be. No idea why Flickr won't let me see them.

Thanks for taking the time to write it all up, appreciated.

That’s a very good reminder about the prostate thing. A friend of mine, had a sucessful operation to have it removed. Another is living with it, but under ongoing observation. Another is fully recovered. ALL because it was spotted early.

The NHS in London used to recommend and run annual screening checks, but they now seem reluctant to do them. To me it makes no sense, as catching the signs early makes everyone’s life easier, surely? I had to ‘persuade’ my local surgery to continue an annual check, not content to accept that “Your historic readings” are normal. It costs them pennies to run the checks and you get a historic record. No test is infallible but not to be tested is just silly. It’ll cost the NHS (and you) a lot more if an unchecked issue appears; that’s for certain.
It’s all a bit of a muddle with screening at the moment.
I believe the only truly effective screening would involve a regular MRI Scan of the Prostate similar to the national breast screening surveillance program for women.
High risk men (history of malignant Prostate Cancer in the family - a grandfather, father or Uncle etc) would be screened at an earlier age and more frequently.
My son who is currently 35 might be screened from 45 onwards so I’m hoping.
Chris Hoy and other celebrities are trying to keep the introduction of a proper screening program high profile and in the public domain.
I think some of the issues particularly involving MRI Scans are cost related and some of the experts in this field are concerned about starting treatment for certain men who don’t need it.

Prostate Cancer can be incredibly complex as 75% of men diagnosed will have the relatively harmless benign variant and will probably die with it and not because of it.
However for the 25% diagnosed with the malignant variant which has already spread to other parts of your body it really is a luck of the draw as to whether you respond to treatment or not.
For me at present I have and continue on treatment which is keeping me in remission.
I have close monitoring under Oncology and have PSA blood tests every three months.
I think the research suggests one in eight white males will get the serious malignant version and one in four black men will get it.
🙂

Nothing much to tell, went twice each time for a week, different locations and on each occasion the Portuguese people I encountered were thoroughly ignorant, pretty much to a man (and woman). I thought I'd maybe been unlucky the first time which is why I tried a 2nd visit, sadly nothing had changed. '3rd world country with the most unpleasant people we'd ever come across' was the decision both myself and my travelling companions came to.
Not just me, my sister went with her hubby and kids and came back with the same conclusion as have other friends who've travelled there separately.

I'm pleased you had a better time though, you're a good egg and deserve nice times and nice things. (y)

Holiday canceled to Portugal tomorrow

I'd best cancel my holiday then for tomorrow. 😅

Tricky you have inspired me to do a trip to Portugal next year on my own . I went two years ago with friends and absolute loved it . Bid sweeping roads no traffic AND NICE PEOPLE . Loved it . Just back from a 3600 mile tour of the former Yugoslavia and it was fab , But I reckon a leisurely trip around Portugal will suit me really well . Thanks for putting this together . Also thinking of going from GSA to GS 1300 as it’s a heavy lump now cheers

I love going on trips with friends but without sounding like a hippy nothing gives you more of a sense of absolute freedom than a solo trip man. 🙂
The standard GS is such a fun bike and was perfect for this trip apart from the seat… I never had issues on the 1200s I used to own so what’s changed I’m not sure?
Anyway it’s easily corrected.
