abs fault

Hi my abs is not working on my 1150gs i have had a chap look at it and did some reistance testing ect but did not have the up to date fault finding equipment, it clicked in once but not since (only had bike 2 weeks) any ideas, just to mention the previous owner wired in auto com to rear lights i have disconected this putting it back to stock

check the bulb then on the rear light (take out and check the filaments not just assume that as there is light it is ok).

Check the micro switches for the front/rear brake.

Check the ABS rings and spacings.

Do you get any warnings or any flashing lights on the dash..

Check the battery, if the charge is low the lights will stay on.

That could even be a flat or failing battery?

is the abs that sensitive to the battery charge and condition as the only time it click into abs was when i had just taken it off charge? is there a certain type of battery I should look for? as i have a vitra (not shore of spelling)

Yes, as you have not had the bike long you probably have stopped and started it quite a lot, mine needed a few hours on a car type battery charger rather than the optimate, around 4 amps, it has been fine since .

The ABS does a self test when its powered up. Unfortunately, if your battery isn't good, the starting load can drop the residual voltage in the battery to the point that the ABS fails its self test and wont initialise. A new battery usually fixes this, but be aware that a bad starter motor can induce the same symptoms even with a good battery.

All those are faults that can happen only on servo braked bikes. Not normal ABS bikes.

Try turning all other electrical items off before turning on ignition. Turn on ignition and wait a few seconds while ABS checks voltage before pressing the starter button.

If they are flashing alternately as you say then re-set it by earthing the center terminal in the abs diagnostic plug under the seat - it may have a blue protective cover.

Run a wire from the centre plug to the battery earth (the better the earth, the easier the reset), turn on the ignition, hold down the abs button on your dash for approx 20 seconds, keep the button held down while you turn off the ignition - that should clear it


Part of the ABS self check is the battery voltage. If you turn on the ignition and hit the starter as it is checking, it will read a very low voltage at the battery (due to the draw from the starter) and it will turn itself off as a safety precaution, due to lack of volts.

If you turn the ignition on, wait a few seconds till the ABS has self checked, then hit the starter, all should be well.

Also turn off the lights, heated grips and other assorted electrics.

It's an 1150 - doesn't have a the 1100 flat plug stick to your computers

Well there's a plug there somewhere.... but it might be some other shape... a round one maybe
