Hi Filks, I need some urgent help. Going to France tomorrow on a R1200GS and the bike decided to act up.
Here goes; When I switch on the ignition the ABS goes through it's diagnostics after which the ABS pump should switch off, well it won't switch off.

Problem started after I forgot to switch off the ignition last night and had to jump start the bike.

Checked the following;
Battery voltage; 12.7V
Battery voltage when starter cranking; 11.62V
Front brake switch; activates rear light and changes the sound of ABS pump.
Rear brake switch; activates light BUT ABS pump sound does not change.
Started the bike using a booster pack to ensure the battery voltage was not an issue.

On the dash pod the following lights are on; warning triangle constant RED.
Brake failure light flashing.

I didn't reverse polarity when connecting jump leads last night.

Please can you help. France is a long walk with 2 panniers.

Thanks.

I would guess you've already checked, but are the hand guards touching the front brake lever?

Checked for the handguard touching front lever.

When the ignition is switched on the warning triangle stays on constant red and the brake light failure light flashes fast and does not reduce to a slower flash after a few seconds as it should.

Brake light bulb fliament working as a brake and tail light, ie try changing the bulb.

Fully charge the battery, disconnect it and then try starting it again?

Or, call out the BM assist, or ride carefully to the dealer?

It is possible that the flat battery has triggered a fault in the computer.

Check the manual (I have an 1150 so can't speak from personal knowledge) to see if there is a procedure for re-setting the computer.

It may also be worth checking all the hydraulic pipes for leaks. I only found out last night that my servo/abs bike has a seperate reservoir each for the front and rear circuits under the tank. This means that you can be loosing fluid and the handlebar reservoir still looks full. If the level drops too far I guess you'd get a fault display.

I think I would take it for a ride, quiet area, and play around with the brakes.

On the 1150 you have a warning light for low fluid in the servo reservoir .

i'd imagine the 1200 has the same warning.

Harry, tried the ride and playing with the brakes. Did a diagnostic check with the GS911 tool and found the fault as the "6 189 internal control module error" in other words lots of money to BMW for making a bike that does not like getting started with a set of jump leads :mcgun

Guess who's going to France on a 1977 Yamaha XS750 with 4000 miles the clock? :clap

Thanks all for your help.:thumb

Speak very nicely to andrew at joe duffys in dublin see if they can sort it for you. Sounds like an internal control unit device error due to voltage spike

Hi Darren, Sounds like you know what your talking about, either from bitter experience or some other way;) I spoke to Duffys last year about another fault and they do not offer any technical help over the phone. They said company policy in case of a claim. Is this something that can be reset without going to the dealer?. It's just that I'm 140 miles from Duffys. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Darren, Spoke with Andrew in Duffys, unfortunately he would need the bike to diagnose the specific fault.

Brendan, try speaking to Hurst's BMW Belfast, 0044 2890 848 466. Prob that fault is a simple re-set.

You could prob be in Belfast sooner than Dub?

Good fortune

Hi Brendan,

Seems like I have the same problem, after reading through old posts. I have just posted a few questions on it. How did you resolve your problem? Was it just a reset ???

Would be grateful.

Sorry for the delayed reply.
No unfortunately the ABS pump was damaged beyond repair and requires replacement.

Brendan, try speaking to monkeypiz :monkeypizHurst's BMW Belfast,. Prob that fault is a simple re-set.

Bollox to that!!!! Safer to go to Dublin at least you're not looked upon as a walking wallet when you walk thru the door!!!!!

Better going where someone actually cares about you / your bike!:hide:hide:hide:

Dont you think thats a bit harsh.
The Boys your talking about provide a service , and they have to
make it pay , otherwise they wouldnt be there.
I have found them as expensive as anyone else , but helpful ,
and sometimes when they are talking about money, humourous.

Nope not in the slightest!!!! Used to work there till I nearly went Do-laaly!!

But Now I'm better, twitch twitch!! <- (Inspector Dreyfus type twitch) :aidan :aidan :aidan :aidan

But seriously though, "Money" appears to mean more than customer care, Certainly my visits to Rainbow and Motorrad Central and Vines would support my Perceptions! Anyone else agree???

NOTE If a mod finds this post too contraversial please delete if you feel the need! It's no big deal for me!
