ABS fucked up MOT woes

Dubster the rule of thumb is

If the lights flash alternately when you switch on the ignition then you have a stored or "seen" fault (i.e. ABS sensor open circuit or another problem) and the ABS will not initialise

If the only flash alternately when you press the starter button then it is the "Low Voltage" fault and again the ABS system will shut down and not initialise until the fault clears (running for 5 mins and then stop and press starter again)

They're flashing at key-on, so having done the reset it must be a 'seen' fault as you say.

I'm leaning towards your explanation of a faulty sensor, but will check the code with an LED once I get the time. Apparently this can also be done with an analogue voltmeter by counting the dips.

Good news is it won't be an issue for the MOT meaning there's riding to be done this weekend :D

Cheers.

Just order up a used one from Motorworks (just explain what yo are doing and see if they will do Sale or Return) or whoever and plug it in If the fault disappears then it's the sensor

Back or front one will be of similar resistance and you don;t even need to fit it just plug it in

BUT

ask for a few shims so you can set the distance the 3 new ones I got were longer and needed extra shims I have a few from de-servoing a couple of bikes and had what I needed

Maybe Steppers would have a good used rear one ?? You could ask if he'd sell you one?

Well for what it's worth, I had my 1100 MOT'd yesterday and while I was there, I asked my MOT man about ABS and flashing lights.

He said "not part of the bike MOT - technically abs warning lights are now an advisory but I generally don't bother. We get all sorts through here like track day bikes with different wheels and off roaders with it disabled. Most people just take the bulb out then no one is any the wiser"

Doesn;t work like that over here!

Fuckin jobsworth bastards THAT SET THE STANDARDS not the guys on the ground They're just doing their job

a non dual marked speedo will see you fail

as will the headlamp alignment being too high or too low!

An ABS motorcycle i.e. an R1150RT that has been de servo'd will have to have all the signs of ABS removed ABS sensor rings and sensors and even then there's some jobsworth twat just fresh in the job with a manual full of schite and ZERO common sense!

Good Luck with it I can see a lot of daytrips to scotland to get those bikes MOT'd

If you maintain a good relationship with your MOT tester you should be able to put the bike in for the test with no worries.

Yup, that works for me too, he makes the coffee too :) .... result...:thumb

and it's...

A PASS! :thumb2

(with advisory)

Also ordered a set of used sensors front and rear from motorworks on a sale or return basis, so fingers crossed that'll put an end to the self-test fail.

A big thanks to everybody. :beerjug:

I feel a thirst coming on... :jager

Should have posted this earlier... it was the rear ABS sensor after all. Must have knocked it or something during the tyre change :nenau

Thanks to all for the input and congrats to DrFarkoff for the correct diagnosis :beerjug:

If the lights are flashing for you, sensors may be worth checking before you go about rebuilding calipers etc as I did :blast
