So much for the 'resale value' they keep harping on about in earlier posts ;)

May I suggest that you take note of the conditions and stop grabbing a handful of front brake and don't rely on (or not) for the ABS to come to your rescue. Rather brake gently and progressively to gently load up that front tyre contact patch and increase breaking accordingly! ABS is no substitute for crap riding ...

Not everyone rides as perfect as you. That's why stuff like this was invented in the first place.
We should all stop wearing protective gear as well, that will teach us to become better riders too.

Yet the California Superbike School has had a 40% drop in crashes since it started using the S1000RR with ABS and Traction Control.
 
There are arguments for and against, and each one to their own I guess. It's all been flogged to death on here before.

We rode police bikes, some with abs and some without ... you never ever stopped to think, as you was taking a bike out, wether it had abs or not, you didn't modify your riding to suit abs or not!

If you prefer abs, or if it has saved your neck then fine stick with it :thumb

I personally enjoy the feel of the brakes without it, much more feed back :blagblah

In 47 years of riding motorcycles, to the moon and back, I can't think of one accident that I've had where abs would have saved me :pullface

As for resale value I've always done very well thank you, but then I don't let the winters salt and corrosion get to my bikes, I look after them, so resale value has as much to do with how you look after your bike as well as if it has abs fitted or not!

Resale value? Well the bike was cheaper by a wedge of money in the first place so not really relevant methinks :thumb

Sorry to have started this thread, all I wanted was a bit of advice before I committed to buying the bike without ABS.
I've got the bike, very pleased with it and no, it has no ABS.
As I was coming home from work on the bike today, a car pulled out of a junction on me. It was the closest I have ever been to a crash. The rain was banging down, my 14 year old son on the back, and when I grabbed the brakes at speed I didn't lock up and so avoided the car!

So, just to put this thread to bed, I'm happy without ABS

Just to get things straight, I'm kicking no one while they're down, I just want people to think about their riding ... as said in this parish, a brain is like a parachute, it works best when open :comfort

I have never said that you don't need ABS, it's a personal preference thing and if it's what you want then great, but personally I prefer not to have it.

Calling names and childish retorts serve no purpose.... :thedummy

Do a BMW off road course and they will have you locking the front brake up, at 30mph on gravel ... ;)

Do a Nürburgring High Performance Course and they will have you locking the front brake up, at 30mph on tarmac, wet or dry ... ;)

In the old days there was no ABS so we backed our horses both ways :cool:

unless you was a Riding God, or a instructor who could put into practice perfect precedure weighing up all the options before you actualy touched the brake lever (split nano seconds) with in built pre hindsight. :beerjug:

He was fine, just a few choice words thrown which he had to listen to, but all is good now. Perhaps it was a good thing my son was on the back, cos if he wasn't, I think I would have the cars wing mirror off f**king taxi b**tard!!

I'm about to upgrade from a 650 with ABS to 800 without ABS.
My question, is it needed? I mainly do most miles on road but with the 800, I may throw in a few off road. Is it worth getting the ABS so I can switch on or off, but pay extra for, or go for the 800 which I have seen which has no ABS and save the money?

Is it needed?? A definite yes. Call me sad but I too was in a position where I was offerd a good deal (in fact a REALLY good deal) on a new 1200 but it didnt have ABS.

I decided not to go for it, as to my certain knowledge its DEFINITELY saved my bacon now twice. I guess you could say its paid for itself in not having to buy new bits for the bike not having to replace my leathers, or having to pay an increased insurance premium because i MIGHT have had to make a claim if the bike hadnt had it............ :blast

SO...... A definite yes and dont leave home without it. I know there are some people on here who claim its not required and that they can brake in a shorter stopping distance than an ABS equipped bike, but im not superhuman, merely average..

Anway, my opinion, nuffsaid and for that reason I'm out... of here...:beerjug:
 
ABS won't save your arse if you're riding like a muppet or on gravel/snow.

Bear in mind that ABS can actually increase your stopping distances under some conditions.:rob

But it did help me avoid a dopey old crofter who decided to pull out and then stop in front of me once. ABS chattering like mad and I just managed to steer round him by literally a couple of cm's. Non-ABS would have had me into the back of him.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

BTW - on the way doen to Gerts' (Nakambale on here) funeral in Aberdeen last week, I rode from John O'Groats down to South of Helmsdale (50 miles) in snow on the twisty part of the A9 at 5.30 in the morning....no gritters to be seen.
Forgot to switch me ABS off, but no problems as I kept brake usage down to a minimum (plus I was the only bugger on the road apart from one transit van behind me:D). If I'd remembered, I'd definitely have switched it off, mind.
