Accelerator Module

Based on the thread over on Pelican Parts, I followed the destructions and bought the bits from Maplins and assembled this the other day:

r12sElectrikery.jpg

It has a variable pot to alter the resistance - inside is a fixed 10K Ohm resistor with a variable 20K Ohm one - so I can alter the resistance manually from 10K to 30K by rotating the knob thingy. The switch simply allows me to by-pass the thing entirely in the event I want to disable it for whatever reason. The tacky sticker I bought at the NEC last year.

This was a doddle to build - it cost me £7 in bits and half an hour behind a soldering iron. I haven't tested it yet as I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. I'll let you know how I get on!

Cheers,
Fin.

Hi Finbarr,

did you work out resistances for various temperatures to be set on your poti.
I made something like yours but would like to know some settings to start with, ie. 25, 30, 35 degC.

thanks

Erm,

having tired to read all of this thread... and blimey it's getting long...

I am now confused as hell as to which one has what benefits over the other... apart from costs etc...

What dangers there are with regards to damage to the engine.

I see that loads of you have these fitted, and so far I fail to see any negatives

And then to confuse my already fried little brain, I found the below on fleabay... I guess its the same sort of thing for under £5

OR, is it really a case of getting what you payfor...?

Balders.... I suppose I've made the mistake of fitting the module straight away (Kid ...toy shop ...) rather than putting some thought into it and doing a before after thing.
I deliberately had a crawl around Canterbury city centre in the traffic, my bike seems very smooth and i'm certainly filtering / rolling up to lights / junctions in second easily enough at walking pace. But wasn't it doing that before??!! The 2010 motor was billed as being smother at low revs, and for a big twin (bearing in mind i spend all day on a '58 1200 RT) it is a much smoother bike. I can't be arsed now!, but what I should have done is to have left the module dangling out the side of the tank panel and taken it off, put it back on ... etc.
For £30, give it a go (and be a bit more thoughtful about it than i have been!), but I'm not exactly sitting here writing Wow.... What a difference.... :thumb (not sure about mpg - i'll come back to you on that one..).

How you gettin on with Acc? Any increase in mpg, performance? :ronno

Errr, ummm, well....... To be brutaly honest, i'm sort of not that interested in mpg. Petrol prices are back up at £1.29 again and whilst I should be, its a toy and I tend to go and play on it and not think about it. (Where as in my car I've stopped doing 85 on the motorway and cruise at 70 chilling to the radio now !!).

But i promise to make the effort to reset my 'puter and let you know next time I go for any distance.

Performance wise, I'm not sure its made a HUGE difference. I'm not expecting more grunt or speed, it's beter, crisper fuelling that it should give you. And as the new twin cam motor is miles smoother than its inferior older brother (Ha, that'll get them going .....), I can't say I'm coming back from a ride thiking wow, this £30 gizmo is blinding ...

Sorry, I'm not really much help am I ....... :blast

Thanks for quick reply! I'm still finking on this one , 2 buy or not 2 buy?? :thumb

I have no doubt its a huge benefit to the single oh cam motors. Does it really improve the 2010 motor though ? I could do with having a back to back test on a 2010 with and without. Stick it on a single oh cam motor, and I'm sure you'd notice the difference straight away. :thumb

Had it on the 07 GSA for a month now - all commuting in London. Certainly the biggest bang for the buck of any mods. It will stay in the higher gears and you can chug around if you so choose. Doesn't appear to make an amazing difference to the mpg either way. I'd certainly recomment the £30 Acc Mod. I can't believe the more expensive unit can do much more and I couldn't be arsed to mess around building one. Plug it in and enjoy.

If you're worrying whether it'd invalidate any warranty, don't worry, it can be removed at the roadside with the tools under the seat.

As for damaging your engine, unlikely given that you're adding more fuel. People risk more adding K&N filters and leaning the engine.

Fitted one of these Acc Modules onto an 08 GSA.
No idea what its doing to the MPG but I dont think too much. The engine is far far smoother across the whole range. Its not going to make a GS into an R1 but there is a performance improvement, probably in the 6-10% range.
Regarding engine damage, running a mixture that is very slightly more rich than the original map will cause no harm in my view. Running an engine lean will cause damage through overheating. I really cannot see the small change having an impact.
Irrespective of the very reasonable cost this product is a fantastic bit of kit. Thumbs up from me. (and if you like to wheelie this is a must have!)

Well I have just ordered one of these off fleabay cost me less than £5 including p+p got to be worth a go at least

I also have an accelerator module on order today should be easy to compare and contrast when they both have arrived.

fitting them to a 2010 Adv an with the ease of fitting it can be removed come service time;)

will let you guys know the feedback when they are both here an done a few miles on each.

all the +hype of the accelerator means you just have to try it and the fleabay item that appears to claims the same at less than £5 is a no brainer to me.

we shall see

I'm not a happy bunny

I ordered the wonderful thing from ebay, thinking it was a BARGAIN :augie

It has just arrived... it's a resistor in a poly bag with instructions for sticking either end in the lead that runs to the air box sensor.
I'm then expected to cover it in tape, for what I assume is to stop things shorting out and going bang!!!

And then this guy has the cheek to charge the cost he does for the postage

So, sorry for putting the link on here... I thought it was going to be a bargain, but feel I got ripped off.

AVOID this ebay seller... just buy the resistor from Maplins.... cos thats all you get :(

Wasn't it Orson Welles who quoted 'I am always satisfied with the best'....

The accelerator module is a properly engineered must-have in my view.

Cheers

great! ah well never mind £4.37 down the drain :blast

And still the Thread gets longer..........:augie
All I can say that after fitiing my Acc Mod some time ago it has not affected my MPG at all. It is still between 48.5 & 50 ish.
What it has done is made the bike far more tractable and smoothed out the snatching at low speeds.
It has got to be the best £20 spent on the bike and well worth the postage from Belgium.!:)

robfin:rob

Ordered Mod last week, delivered in 4 days, fitting took 10 mins start to finish, first impressions are NICE!.......... as with very many previous posts, engine smoothed out, better acceleration, bigger smiles!!!:D. All in all, definately the best Mod for around £30 I,ve spent yet.Recommended:thumb2

Having looked at the Acc Mod site, they are saying a new updated MOD is due soon...
Having contacted them, they say its due for release this week.

I have asked whats the difference between old and new...

Not sure what the difference is between the old and revised model is... but I'm gonna hold tight and see what the revised model is all about.
