Thanks Tim, I have just heard from Coopers that they don't have a part in stock...but they should have it fixed by Tuesday!! assuming it is that problem?

When I spoke to Coopers service yesterday, they said they have not really had any bikes with this fault......seems odd to me after looking at this post...

ews failure

my EWS failed last night in the shell garage selkirk is this the scottish secret weapon as my mates fpc did the same in the same garage 18 months ago spooky and we had been joking about it at st marys 20 minutes before bastard bmw's.

New FP relay fitted AND A VENTED PLASTIC COVER OVER THE ENTIRE MODULE AREA (to prevent water ingress), anybody else had this fitted?(dealer had all parts in stock & was aware of this thread!).
No lost days just late for one meeting!

Boffer, who was the dealer and can you post a picture of this??

Lind Motorrad , Norwich.
Sorry can't post attachments

Thanks. Mine went into Astles in Grimsby and they did not appear to know about any fixes etc so just replaced the part. I will get details from Lind (which is where I bought the bike!)

Cheers

You must be kidding!!!! A dealer that doesn't know about this....:blast

I have just spoken to Peter at Lind who sold me the bike and he also makes as though he doesn't know of this problem but he is getting the service guys to phone me in the morning!:(:( If there is some kind of fix I want it! I have also filled in the VOSA defect form and sent off to Tim.

Recovered to local dealer and collected next working day.

My '05 had the plastic black cover. My '07 GSAdv DID NOT have a cover.
As mentioned earlier my fuel pump driver went bad while in Texas.

Evening Wylliegs
Interesting comment about module cover slots, unfortunately I suspect your coments are correct. Whilst we don't have your rain here in Norfolk we still occasionally clean our bikes!
Might have to consider an additional baffle for the rain/wash water. Anybody tried this?
(interestingly met a non GS BMW rider with the same problem, he was being offloaded from a breakdown truck into the same dealer as I use?) Is this problem bigger than we think? Or is that dare think?

Cover

I have made a cover for the plastic cover (!) I used a bit of light sheet plastic and some bodge tape and gave it a hat. The vents are still free to vent but they have a bonnet to stop water dripping straight down. And the FPC....dry as a bone with no corrosion at all. I can take a piccie if you want.

A hat for your vented cover

I have attached 2 photos of the cover I have made for my cover. It protects from all water falling onto the fuel pump area but I haven't just taped over the vents. The FPC can still breath and cool. It seems to have worked as far as I can tell. The FPC is dry and shiny and new. By the way, fairly sure that vented plastic cover was meant to be there in the first place.

Cheers

G

Ok my 07 GSA is in for a 20k km service tomorrow, so far not had any problems with the FPC ( its a silver one no covers, but showing signs of rusting on the heat sink fins ) should I try to get it changed while still under warranty ? Will they change it if its not broken? I would rather have the latest version now rather than break down in 6 months time when the bike is out of warranty . any one know BMWs policy on this item ?

hats off

hi gipsymagpie
simple method to keep the rain out ,especially when parked on the side stand, funny that bmw spend millions on development but miss this issue with the fpc..with mine already lagged the connections with waxoyl and sealed the wires going in with silicone .out to the garage now to make mine .:clap:clap:clap:clap

Prevention?

Given all these problems.......... what can be done to prevent it? - other than not buying an R1200 GS/A!
I am seriously considering a 1200GSA but becoming wary after reading some of the problems being reported.
:eek

Tim, I wouldn't be too sure that the latest version has fixed anything as I have recently had this response from a BumW dealer:
"BMW have advised me that they are working with the Factory (Munich) and VOSA to apply a permanent ‘fix’ solution to this problem. They will not give any undertaking to the time scale.........."

That just means they don't have a lot of faith yet so aren't saying the latest one IS the fix unless it bites them on the arse.
