Adaptive Cruise Control worth it?

GS riders debating the merits of adaptive cruise control for use on a motorway. I would rather question why a fun bike like the GS is on the motorway in the first place!

I've been riding GS motorcycles since 1999. I use motorways to get from A to B Faster. Im away touring from April through to September. Covering 15k - 20 K Miles annually , All over Europe, Asia and Africa.
Why wouldn't I use a motorway Or Cruise Control ?

I totally agree, I hate riding on motorways ... but let's say I want to ride the Salzburger mountains or northern Italy.
On the motorways that's 15 hours from Roscoff - my usual crossing.
Without motorways it's 25 hrs, another 10hours or two days each way.

If time (and money) is no object then far nicer to explore cross-country and see more too.
But that's adding a lot of time and cost to a trip, and to be fair I know a lot of the countryside I'm passing through form previous trips - so sometimes you just want to get somewhere new.
Also worth mentioning that spending 8 hours on a French autoroute is a joy to spending a fraction of that time anywhere in the UK.

It's these times that the Adaptive CC comes in to its own. But much nicer to avoid motorways if you can. (y)

In my experience, if you have a lot of miles to cover and its horrendous weather such as torrential rain it's the sensible choice, rather than chugging through viliages and towns averaging 30mph for the day getting drenched.

Also getting to Portsmouth or Dover from the North of England, to get across the channel, 250 plus road miles to cover, what other options would you have?

Got adaptive cruise on the car and hate it.
It can also be dangerous when the car in front turns on a slip road and the adaptive cruise decides to brake.
I am sure that it will also be responsible for extra brake wear, both for the car and the GS.

Much preferred standard cruise control function, where I can plan ahead for a lane change without adaptive deciding it will slow me down too early.
Each to their own.
Standard cruise, heated grips, rest of tech is just more stuff to go wrong and encourage dashboard warning lights.

I find standard cruise control is a bit of a waste of time on British roads as they are never empty enough to be of use. Adaptive cruise is more use as you just follow the traffic. Bike, or car, you just override it temporarily with accelerator if a vehicle in front turns off. No significant extra brake wear as it uses engine braking unless it needs to stop fast.
Not sure you are saying heated grips aren't worth having?? , if you are then I totally disagree in that one.

I believe if you can’t see a vehicle slowing down in front of you
You shouldn’t be riding. Motorcycle
Even if your a customer of specsavers 😳😳😳

This says it all. "Standard cruise, heated grips, rest of tech is just more stuff to go wrong and encourage dashboard warning lights"
Maybe use a 1970's kick start bike. Less to go wrong. Or, even better, A horse (y)
I meant keep the standard cruise control and heated grips…not the rest. It could be read two ways…and you read it the wrong way ;)

Some of the tech coming out looks to be adding unwanted complexity and reliability problems and it coincides with many more reports of reliability issues. This is really the point. Hell yes, have all the tech, if it is going to work for you. Just dont be surprised along the way if there are more failures, stands to reason if you add more complexity and parts..

They said exactly the same when someone fitted a steam engine into a Locomotion. Probably.

Probably.
My concern is the number of brand new parts, including switches/sensors (failures..) brakes (excess wear) suspension (failures, I think with ride height versions) add in my own experience with collision warning and adaptive cruise on cars. My Toyota of 7 years ago was a joke for collision warning faults.
So maybe adopting all of the new tech at once, with all new parts at once is for the beta testers.
Im in the market for another bike atm, GS, Multistrada probably. ESA/Skyhook almost unavoidable and tbh tech I would want.
…and heated grips, standard cruise ….erm, wait, the heated grips failed on the Mutistrada 👊🏻

I was one of those guys who didn't see the point in adapted cruise control.. never had it before so never missed it only ever had normal cruise control.. However I find the adapted cruise is excellent.. only the other day I was on my back from the start button recall or should I call it the enhancement :DDon the way home jump on the on the motorway I set the speed to 75 mph didn't need to touch the brake the adapted cruise slowed when other vehicles slowed then kept the safe distance then back to the set 75 mph the system didn't miss a beat.. its like the blind spot monitors there not to let you relax.. there to help you out.. we have all come across when some fool who is in a day dream/ shouting at the kids or being moaned at by their better half:wife it only takes a split second to not apply the brake in time which causes a knock on effect and possible a pile up with adapted cruise control that won't happen.. my next car will defo have adapted cruise control(y)

I have it in the car; love it; use it very often. It’s great in stop/start traffic.

One neat trick is that it displays the speed of the vehicle in front (up to about 400m away). I saw a car pass me and accelerate to 125mph before going out of range.
