So who,s got what and given your use of the bike, was your choice the correct one?

First time of trying a Polland unsure about message format

I,m basically trying to establish ;

Whats the best option for road use/commuting/touring with the option to do some light off road work occassionaly.

Please let me know your choice and whether you made the correct one

The only thing I would add is that for most 99% of the time the std first gear will be ok.

The low first gear is very useful when you are either two up or have the bike packed with luggage and you are doing a lot of hilly stop 'n' starts. Hardknock Pass as an example.

Or..............you are maybe brave (daft) enough to take it off-road!

The rest of the time its to dam low and a complete waste of time.

Its a compromise is'nt it, its like saying dirt bike or road bike? You simply cannot have one bike to do all functions at the end of the day.

You need to decide exactly what you are buying the bike for, if its just you on it and you will never take it off-road and you only do one trip a year loaded up, then opt for the std first gear.

If you are doing a lot of two up riding, then you "may" need to think about the low first gear

Saying that when I ordered my GSA I wanted the low first gear option.....why......coz I mainly ride solo, dont take it off road and only do one multi day trip a year........why then.........coz I'm stupid thats why!

i dont suppose you would know if its the wrong choice unless you have had both.... unlikely.

FWIW, I have the Adv with the standard 'high' first box, and sometimes would like to have a shorter first when 2-up, i.e hill starts and stuff.

Also, I read on here that the low first option is in very short supply. Check with your dealer.

Exactly...me too.Just want to make sure were not missing out one something don't we!

Low First

I think low first is the right choice especially when trickling about in fields and on tracks with little or no throttle as the speed is that little bit slower when negotiating fords and muddy holes etc. My mates standard GS feels so much different in first it's rolling that bit faster and sixth gear is much 'taller' for road work the normal first is fine. Horses for courses depends on what you do most I suppose.

Stop please!More confusion!

I was under the impression that all 2005 UK Spec.ADV's had the same 6th gear ratio

Anyone confirm?

It is.

The 6th on all Adv AFAIK is lower than the original standard 1150GS thats all. On an 1150GS non-Adv when you select 6th gear it says 'E' on the RID, i guess for 'E'conomy, its a overdrive.

Don't worry, all GSA'a have the same sixth gear ratio. It is classed as the 'sports ratio' on the std GS and can be speced as a no cost option.

Just for info, but at 70 mph there is 800 rpm difference between the two gear ratios.

Well I did too! But I'm very happy with the lower ratio 1sr gear. Its not that much lower anyway, anyone would think its like the difference between Hi and Lo ration in a 4x4, it isn't.

I find you just change up that bit sooner, that's all.

Personally, I think its better to have it. Even if not doing much off road (like me) it is VERY useful for those slow speed, turn it round in the road, on a camber, moments :D

Its not 'too' low, gives the advantage of a nice, slow, low gear if needed, and if you don't like it...change up - or pull away in second.

At least if you have it you can use it.... or not ;)

(When you come to sell your bike in a few years time, people seem to want the adventure with the low gear, so may affect resale value if not... no evidence to back this up though  )

I've got the low 1st gear (enduro transmission) and *it is not very low*. I have a hard time imagining why anyone would want the "regular" transmission, it seems insanely highly geared to me.

I traded in my 05 ADV with high 1st gear for an ADV SE yesterday. I'm fairly certain the SE has the low 1st gear, RESULT :thumb There isn't much difference and I didn't notice it straight away but it definitely feels better. The high 1st gear is too high for pottering about off-road, I was constantly slipping the clutch and it was hard work. Can't wait to get some TKC 80s on the SE and try it out
