Hi

my dealer got me a nice new GSA in silver, just the spec I`am after, except its got a "standard" gearbox with no lower 1st gear.
A couple of experienced people in my previous thread (GSA specs?) have told me that it also wont have the overdrive 6th gear that the GS has,but my dealer insists that it is the same engine and gear box as the standard 1150gs and has overdrive 6th.
I had a go around the carpark this morning on it and it is a bit highly geared in 1st for my taste,I would certainly prefer the enduro box for the light green laneing i`d like to do on the bike, but I also liked the overdrive when I tried that on a GS,so would consider keeping the bike if it did have the overdrive.
What is the deffinative answer on this one, overdrive 6th on a standard(non enduro) GSA box or not
Its all academic now anyway as I`ve just had a message that they`ve found me another identical bike but with the enduro box and nobblies on it,should be here next week.
I can`t wait, spent the last 8 months drooling over pictures of GSs I`am finally going to get my very own:D

Regards

Jon

Normal is OK..

I've got the normal box and find the standard 1st gear OK, I do a lot of 2 up riding through the mountains, with my son, a topbox and me there is about 180kg (28stone) on board, we go down a few dirt tracks (sometimes 25km long) as well, although I've got no problem with standard box, the 6th gear instead of overdrive must be costing me some petrol but I like the pull in 6th as opposed to changing down, have a search and you'll find a few threads on the gearbox, and knobbly tyres.

Whatever you get, if it's in "Schmoove Silver" it'll be good anyway

Ask yourself this

Is the majority of your riding .....off road....yes...lower 1st
on road......standard first

There is NO OVERDRIVE on the GSA.

I had a 2002 GSA with the standard (not Low) 1st and non-overdrive 6th, whilst I had it I never found the "low" 6th to be a problem but I always wished I'd ordered the low 1st. (dealer talked me out of it at the time) .

Got a GSA with enduro 1st gear. Absolutely vital for wibble-wobbling through the stationary traffic on the M25 doing those trials type manoevers round the front of trucks and slow speed bar flicks to avoid transit wing mirrors.

I think the 6th gear on GS vs overdrive gear on 1150RT makes about 4mph difference at 4000rpm if I recall correctly from when I was running it in.

Good news on the bike :)

The enduro 1st gear is a real improvement
against the GS 1st.
Shame you can't have the enduro 1st
and the overdrive :P
I know it's a bit late but the ADV will show 6 in the little window instead of the E on the GS.

Granted I should have known better but my dealer never even mentioned the options when I ordered my GSA. At the time I did not ask because I did not know! No worries because I am happy with what I have got although not sure what gearbox though.

Should have consulted this forum but again the problem was I did not know this forum existed!! Oh well better late than never:)

My 2002 Blue and white GS (the fastest) shows "6" after fifth. With a y piece fitted I think I prefer the lack of immediate acceleration for the easy cruising of the overdrive.
