Morning folks

I'd like to pick the brains of the collective if I may.

I'm after an 1150 GS, having had a couple of 1100s over the years. I want the extra height and clearance that the adventure gives, but don't really want to pay the premium they're going for just now.

So the plan is to get a really good standard GS and raise it to Adventure seat height (I'm a lanky fecker) along with a few other bits and pieces to make it more "Adventurey".

Has anyone done this?

Anything I should look out for?

For example the drive shaft angle and length of overlap on the splines will change.

I guess most people not so lanky would be doing this the other way around, to lower an adventure.

Welcome your thoughts ...

Include a set of GSA stands in your calculation; although I can't see why the spline angle would change if you're raising by the same height at each end ?

Gs

Just by my fully equipped 1150GSA nothing to do ~ already done, save all the 4kin around!:D

Cheers Paul - yes a stand, forgot that, and an MRA screen ...

It was a while ago but a mate did a similar mod on his new 1100 with replacement Wilbers. His swing arm angle definitely changed. From what I remember the ADV drive shaft is a different number from the standard one.

Yes well, it's the right colour and everything!

I'm still pulling the cash together so it'll be a while yet before I"m properly in the market I'm afraid.

I think you'll find the adv shaft is different because it has a master spline. :)

OK I know I'm slow but I'm not sure what you really want here.

Extra clearance? Why?

Extra seat height - I understand if the current position is wrong for you and causing discomfort but raising the height alone won't change that - you have to drop the footrests a bit - then you can play around with bar risers to get the handlebars just so....it soon gets complicated hence the question - what is the problem you want to fix?

Aha - you're right I didn't give all the info.

I'm after more ground clearance to get over lumpy things off road, and so I can drop the footrests a wee bit (I did this on my 1100 with some bodged up brackets) without forever grounding out. I'll also put a higher seat on, rental fat bars (Ricky bars if I can find them) and risers. I had my old 1100 set up perfectly and foolishly went and sold it.

I've done it on mine. Wilbers Adv spec shocks onto '02 GS, need to do the hockey puck extension on the sidestand, haven't bothered changing the centre stand,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, makes it really easy:D

I've done it on my 1150.
Fitted Ohlins adv shocks, make a noticable height gain.
I used the GSA main stand + springs and hanger as the std one doesn't lift the rear wheel = dangerous.
Fitted a puck to the side stand.
No problems to report with the std drive shaft.
Got to be at least 6 years so far.

I had a rear1150 rt ohlin Shock on my ex gsa at one point. It was like a chopper. Rode well in fact. Not an improvement, just different!

Would a brand spanking new adv shock not be tooo high?

Excellent, thanks fellas. I could flat-foot my '99 KTM 640, so nothing's too high!

Cheers all

Well one of my earlier girlfriends christened me a lanky streak of piss. 6'3" so not quite at your level.

Yep, did this on my standard 1150 without the hockey puck mod
