Advice/help

Any recommendations on a replacement? I’ve a fair few Chinese and us replacements
Anyone bought one whats your thoughts?

first decision is to decide if you want a new device to a) fit the BMW cradle and b) if yes, do you want it integrating with the wonderwheel

get yourself into the GPS section on here as there are plenty of opinions and links to Youtube reviews to aid procrastination

Thought it would be a long shot, but trying it on a cradle might stop the reboot cycle.

Either a new battery, or cut your losses and get a new device. Garmin Zumo XT at Sportbikeshop is a good price https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/497156
Can’t see it being a battery issue as it hold a charge for a long time
When not plugged in will try the cradle but that’s not gonna help re updating the unit
Zumo looks good at that price point
But I see these fancy CarPlay units that have my eye 😬

I’m betting it’s a battery issue.

The battery shows the volts when not under load, and is all mouth and no trousers when the device is pulling current.

Regarding “can’t find the satellites as it needs an update”, I doubt it. It might need a very long time to find them, and it’ll need a clear view of the sky - outdoors, horizon is sight at least in one direction, preferably all round (that’s difficult in most of Britain).

Can you manually set the date? That’ll help.

Battery probably cheaper than new nav system. Then again, new nav system probably has new toys.

Can’t set the date manually apparently after a quick google search
To be fair for a 3rd party battery price of 20quid it’s gotta be worth a punt is guess 🤷🏻‍♂️
Ain’t really arsed about the toys but if I HAVE to get a new one may as well!
Cheers mate

I have a Nav 5
The battery wasn’t holding charge so on the advice from a thread on here I rang Garmin who sent me a new battery free of charge, despite it being years old.

I’ll try to find the number

Edit

Here you go

Granted the cradle wont help with updating the unit, but if the unit doesn't reboot in the cradle and gets satellite coverage updating its location, time and works like a satnav while out on the road probably giving the battery a better charge (depending on how long you try it). Then it may be more likely to behave properly when trying to update the software via the Garmn USB.

If you do put it on a cradle, with the bike or car running, let the device find satellites while stationary in an open environment. i know you know this but just saying :)

Fancy Carplay units need a moble phone for data (I believe), which is fine if your happy with that. My preference is dedicated satnav.

I had similar where unit was standing for12 months, issue was it had been turned off hundreds of miles from where I was rebooting it, charged it and then left it outside in the garden away from trees and buildings where it took three of four hours to locate satellites.
Used a dedicated charging lead and not a data transfer lead and a phone charger rather than via a computer to get it to charge
