After 20K miles on the 1250 GS & 1250GS ADV - A honest review

This is an opposed piston engine.

Stever...Here is the answer for you...2 , 4 or 18 wheels...I let you pick :thumb
Dean0...I hope you have a patent on that design. If it doesn't find a place powering a car, motorcycle, boat or plane it will make an interesting sex toy...:D Either way you will be rich and able to afford a new GS :thumb

Now obsolete, designed for MTBs and used in locos.

Boxerlusts Vehicles.

Hmm, an evasive, none specific reply. I still think you drive a milk float.......and only ride a moped !

Seeing he can't be bothered to post pictures to show what he does, I thought I'd help him:

Getting back on topic...Comparing the 911 GT3 engine with the 1250 shiftcam the bore is about the same 102 vs 102,5 mm but the Porsche has 81,5 mm stroke vs the BMW 76mm...If the Porsche was a twin it would 1332 ccm vs 1254 ccm the BMW.A big plus on the BMW is that is has 2 intake cam lobes (shiftcam) one for Torque at lower to mid rpm and one for top end power. Both redline @ 9000 rpm the Porsche making 170 hp @ 8400rpm and 155 nm @ 6100 rpm if it was a twin...Only difference the Porsche boxer has a center bearing like the R18 has the 1250 shiftcam doesn't...Cylinders are less offset on the 1250.And of course a dry single plate instead of a wet multi-plate clutch. So 170 hp and 155 nm torque are more than realistic for the upcoming 1300-1400 cc boxer :thumb2

But you’re the only person who wants a GS with 170bhp !
I think you’ll find most others who find themselves on the 3 year PCP conveyor belt and can’t get off would prefer an improvement in build quality, reliability and a battery that lasts more than a week ....
Oh...and brakes that aren’t wooden :-)

Careful. You’re talking good sense. He will get confused.

Arsey if the GS had 170 hp 1290 KTM and Ducati MS V4 sales would be...ZERO !
And Yes build quality & reliability is always appreciated...
Wooden brakes ? My GS doesn't have that problem but gives me wood every time I ride it...:thumb

What you fail to realise is that not everybody has been rammed by the corporate BMW butt plug and for some, the modern GS would have the same appeal whether it had 100, 150 or 200bhp........ZERO !

Arsey you are obviously a bike owner and not a bike rider because for a bike RIDER there is no better riding STREET bike than a R1250GS with sports-suspension...Show me a better one and we meet and I show you that you are wrong again...;) Of course for the track or the Autobahn sunday mornings @ 6:30 there are better bikes for obvious reasons...But they are also made by BMW...:D (M1000RR)
So much for ZERO appeal of the GS as the best tool for the road...And obviously some other people must feel the same how much they sell despite the prices...Expensive but so are the S1000XR,1290 SADV-S and MS V4 but where are the alternatives or competition to these 3 bikes ? Nowhere...Except maybe a real KTM if you ride off-road,maybe a T-7 if you ride around the world taking mostly unpaved roads or a superbike if your riding season consists of track-days...but that's it.And please don't tell me the new Harbor Freight Special from Harley call Pan Am is in the same category...If you get closer than 10 feet and can see the details you turn away...:barf

Seeing that BMW is a very small motorcycle manufacturer in terms of output (even smaller than KTM) it means that there are millions of motorcycle owners and riders that clearly proofs that you are talking shit.

Didn’t know BMW was smaller than KTM.

The market data is 1 year behind so we can look at the 2019 data. I don't now when the 2020 data will be released or if it is released.

KTM 280 099 units globally
HD 218 273
BMW 175 162

Source; https://www.advpulse.com/adv-news/ktm-breaks-sales-records-beating-major-brands-in-us-and-abroad/

This pales to insignificance to the output of Honda which exceeded 20 000 000 units globally in 2018 and marked 400 000 000 units produced since 1949 in the year 2019. No telelever or 170 bhp and very few with shaft drives in comparison. This is actually on their press release on their website; https://hondanews.eu/eu/no/motorcyc...ing-the-production-of-400-million-motorcycles

So, don't let a fool come and tell you otherwise. Nothing is better than what suits you best.

Of course in units produced KTM is in front of BMW including all the dirtbikes and little 125/390 made in India by Bajaj...In economic output BMW is still way before KTM considering BMW makes/sells way more big bikes than KTM.The 1250 boxers are the # 1 selling bikes worldwide above 1000 cc and that for a good reason !
As was surprised that the german motorcycle industry and that also includes all things motorcycle (parts/components,tires,etc.) is worlwide the No 2 bigger than the japanese in 3rd spot with the chinese in 1st place...Oh well I will never buy a chinese bike or a fake BMW with a chinese engine...And that was BEFORE the scamdemic with the flu coming out of Wuhan either made made in some biologic weapons laboratory or horrendous hygienic situations on some market where animals got killed and eaten...

What you continually fail to realise is simply because you believe something, doesn’t make it fact.
The 1250GS is the best street bike in your eyes, for your needs.
I’d rather take the car !!
I’m surprised you don’t like the new Pan Am-it’s got much more power than your beloved GS-you keep telling us you need more power,it’s innovative and it’s styled like an F150 truck, which you guys seem to like.

In economic output

Do you even know what this means? Here is an explanation 'quantity of goods or services produced in a given time period' which means that BMW is not so economic as there are several brands that produce more motorcycles that BMW per year. The manufacturing plant is actually very small, split between an engine machine shop which is separate and the component and final assembly in a 2 storey building. I know, I have been there.

The 1250 boxers are the # 1 selling bikes worldwide above 1000 cc and that for a good reason !

Erm, actually it is a Harley Davidson Iron 1200.

The market share for BMW is approx 4 - 5%. That will give you an idea of how small a manufacturer they are. And when it comes to parts manufacturing. Most parts manufacturing is outsourced, especially electronics and gearboxes (Ricardo for BMW and others). We can safely say that the biggest manufacturer also supplies the most parts to keep those millions of Hondas running.

Fixed for accuracy.

The H-D 1200 Iron the best selling bike over 1000 cc ? Of course it is that is why Harley stopped making Sportsters...:D
The LC 1200/1250 gearbox is made in japan and not by Ricardo...I don't know what planets you guys most life on but it must be the planet of the apes which always make me laugh when I visit the circus or zoo...:thumb
And Arsey I know you would be much happier in a car when a GS has ZERO appeal to you...Why do you spend half of your life on a GS-Enthusiast forum...;) Oh well life goes on ! And yes the 1250GS/GSADV is the No 1 selling bike worldwide bigger than 1000 cc :thumby:
B.t.w. what part # has the BMW butt-plug you seem to love so much , even more than your Trump toilet brush...:D

Actually this is not an enthuiasts forum, it is forum that encapsulates a lot more if you dare to look around. And this section is the technical section dedicated to 1200/1200 LC BMW. Basically bullshit is reserved for the pub section.
