Air Filter

All you’ve got to do, in deciding which bolts/studs/nuts need thread locker is figure out where then can go if they come loose….
look closely and you can see the thread pattern off one of the studs that was sucked through the motor……View attachment 274771
Bloody hell 😳 I'd best get looking.

Not sure what I could loose anything into the intake after having a look ?
Also what filter cleaner do you use ? I bought this in a kit but need some more. Back in the day I just used petrol but read its not good for the filter.20230724_033139.jpg20230724_040944.jpg

Ok I'm on it thanks. Got loctite so 1st job.
Thanks again Doris.

Blue loctite is medium strength, -

Red is high strength

Most of the bolts on the GS are blue loctited.

Since fitting my new air filter I have noticed I'm getting a bit of oily type stuff coming out of filter after a run. Not a lot but didn't notice before on my other filter. Definitely not from me spraying filter with filter oil.
Bike is running fine but unsure if i should put my other back on. View attachment 265435View attachment 265436
I put mine to a pukka collector with a tube drain to deck to bypass it going into the air filter.
Mind you, that's on '95 Evo engine not all your new swizzy shit!
Mine still works.

All done. Let's see if it works.
And Doc's mechanics workshop is open :cool:20230730_033012.jpg20230730_033429.jpg20230730_034918.jpg

More than a passable job there, next thing you know you’ll have a hydraulic ramp in yr front room with some old shitter being re-incarnated on it.

BTW trim those zip ties and line them up or my OCD will be jittering all day.

Doc,
consider buying a torque wrench, 3/8 inch drive is best for bikes.

Im on it. Which one do i need. Never used one though so another thread will be needed.:D
I use a 3/8 drive one from the Halfords professional range. Good quality but not silly money. If you know anyone with a Halfords trade card you can get it even cheaper.
Remember, you can pay to much for tools as your only "home spannering" . Its not worth spending Snap on tools sort of money for home tools.
You can soon spend way to much if you don't watch out. Ive been acquiring tools since i was an Apprentice mechanic in 1978 and now my roll cabinet is way heavy.
Amongst the ESSENTIAL tools ive got is a Laser Torque wrench which use Crowfoot spanner ends, rather than a square drive.Used it once in 2008, never touched it since. A total waste of money.
So be warned, shiny tools are like a drug habit :DD once you start it runs away with you.

Cheers a few to pick from Steve. And cheers Nin

I use these and they work fine.

The ones with the ‘push through’ square drive are a pita. I much prefer this type.

It’ll be in inch pounds or cubit grains or summat.

MST torque wrenches will have multipul scale ranges on them. I would agree with the comment about covering 20 to 75 Ft lbs.

thinking about it, as the bolts etc on the bike are imperial, perhaps you only need a ft lbs scale on it.
