Over-hyped? My bikes including an un alarmed HP2 have always been parked on the street with an Almax to keep them safe. Never lost one yet

It was hotwired in my mates back yard. Last time I buy a bike with without EWS. Nothing to do with this thread anyway. I have a very nice lock at home can't remember the name of it to hand.

In the old days Almax marketing used to be very poor and trade seemed to be based on word of mouth, I heard about them on VD a few years ago. Good to see they are still going and are still IMHO the best.

Anyway, back to your bike, as this thread is about alarm v chains how can it have nothing to do with this thread? I am led to believe my new bike does not even have an ignition lock so I am always keen to hear how other people loose bikes so I can learn from it, especially as mine will be parked mostly on the road.

It had no alarm, no lock, no chain, no ews, for the 5min I left it in my mates back yard (locked, high fencing).

New bike has all four no matter where it's left. At home it's ground anchored and has a 18mm baron steel chain - it came recommended from my da's business (locksmiths of some 70 yrs).

Thats why Almax were nearly thrown out of the bike show 2 years ago....
they went and bought a chain from all those "better" ones and then cut them up on their stand inside 1 min with hand tools only... then invited ANYONE to have a go at cutting the Almax chain....
I don't believe there is a "Better" chain only a few (very few) that are as good...
Anyway....lock AND alarm so long as YOU can hear it..
My BMW alarm isn't that sensitive but between it an my chain (Almax) I sleep soundly at night..

I guess that Almax chains like any other would not hold off a sustained attack by an angle grinder. This is not however the thiefs first form of attack as it is too noisy in the dead of night or would draw attention in a public place during the day.

The first form of attack would be the croppers. From Almax videos you can see that they have to be very big croppers, too big for the opportunist on foot or bike, more suitable for the man in a van or thief targetting a bike in a known location ie:- your yard or garage.

To secure the bike properly you need to site it in as awkward a position as possible for the thief to operate his croppers/cutter. With the alarm the bike will have to be moved to gain access to the chain causing an activation. Thieves dont like drawing attention to themselves.

There is another problem, some spitefull Sh1ts will cause deliberate damage when they are unable to steal the bike.

For the totally paranoid like me consider CCTV..

i use a chain hardened with stellite rods, i did it myself at work, it takes an angle grinder 3 times longer to get through a chain with this coating, every second counts

Some chav low life's pushed my Adventure so hard early one evening that it set the alarm off and ended up leaning against my front window. The good news is I had them on film as I use an IP cam that takes pictures when it senses motion, incensed I called the police who looked at the perfect picture, ummed and tutted a bit and then said there was nothing they could do and no, they did not need me to print the picture off or email it to them

These days I would not bother to call them and instead use a mix of security devices including 44 kgs of dog from hell (Weimaraner male) that sleeps very lightly and goes berserk at anything he hears and does not recognise.

Baby alarms are also very good if you keep it in a garage or workshop as does being on nodding/chatting terms with the local youngsters even if they have not forgiven me for selling the Daytona

I'm sure I've had this argument before, Almax chains are over-hyped by bikers that have watched the adv rider videos. Check out Bulldog chains (hardened baron alloy steel). Expensive but you get what you pay for.

I note that the Almax videos do not include a test on Bulldog products. However the chain and lock combo being sold by BDog include a SS lock which could be cropped.
I conclude that both chain and alarm are the way forward, but at cost (although small compared to price of bike, and offset against insurance loss on NCD and reduced premium)

In answer to your statement
I've ridden all over Europe BEFORE Mobile phones and Relay.
I've also drove trucks to places such as Saudi, Greece, Poland etc ALL before the EU was formed so you needed around 12 different currencies, and be able to convert all on the spot, or you'd get ripped off ..

Main differences between me and you are>>
I can reuse the same vehicle for trip after trip [over 60+k a year for 10 years continental trucking]

My 1150GSA had a Datatool alarm/immobiliser,not a moment's trouble whilst I owned the bike,wonder if it's let it's new owner down at all
No alarm on my 1200GSA but they are fitted with such a good immobiliser that sometimes even the owner with the correct key can't get 'em to go
I've had an almax chain for a couple of years now,no toytown squire lock though-mine has an Ingersoll enclosed shackle lock,but as has been said it's only a deterrent,if a pro thief wants your bike he's having it
