Alcohol in Morocco

There's been a general clampdown on alcohol sales to Muslims in Morocco. The Marjane Hypermarket chain (owned by SNI, the holding company of king Mohammed VI) now no longer sells alcohol in any of its chains. In addition, several of the downmarket bars for locals that I have frequented in the past have closed.

At the moment Acima supermarkets (also owned by SNI) still sell alcohol but it seems this might change at any time.

I should have thought there will be some 'feedback' to these moves from the tourist industry as many visitors will be unable to obtain the quite decent Moroccan red wine and lager. So I am hopeful that eventually there will be some easing. In the meantime stock up whenever you can.

There's a Lidl in Ceuta next to the ferry terminal, another off the A7 motorway to the east of Algeciras (N36 10.887 W5 26.368). The supermarket on the main drag in Ouarzazate is still in operation, as is Grand Hotel Tazi in Marrakech. Carrefour is another outlet with four hypermarkets and a large number of supermarkets.

No need to panic just yet! We had no problems last week, a quick query of the restaurant ear before taking a table and,hey presto, the young man is off in a taxi....Moroccan red and white wines produced...very good!
Our first trip, and what a wonderful country and people! Can't wait to return.

The new Carrefour..5 or 6 mins ride north of the Ourika campsite in Marrakech sells all sorts of alcohol. There's also a Pizza Hut,Domino's, a couple of burger/chicken type places,Indian and Chinese food there too.
