i want to fit an ali top box to my 1200gs, not 100% sure which one yet, however i have been looking at the hepco top box, however on the page for the fitting rack Part No.69644RC it says that some original body work need to be cut away??? is this a normal thing to do?
basically i am looking for a no nonsense easy fit ali box to take 1 helmet and a few bits, does anyone have recommendations?

thanks in advance

mike

Ive got the genuine BMW ali box fitted to my 1200gsa, you would need a fitting plate which bolts onto the existing rack on the gsa(not sure about the gs), works well, no cutting etc, will hold a full face helmet as well:thumb as top boxes go i am happy with it. (only really use it when the missus is on the back, gives her a bit of security)

Top box for GS/GSA

These are not the same of course. I have a standard BMW box fitted to my GS and it is fine and will take my system 6 helmet. On a previous GS I had a larger Givi box fitted but when I had problems with the supports the dealer suggested that I was overloading them - but i certainly wasn't. If you stick with the BMW one you will be able to use just one key for ignition and all locks and it matches the vario panniers. It can have a neat back-pad fitted which is ideal for a passenger.

thanks for the info brian, i am presuming that the best place to buy the vario box is through my local AD? or is there other outlets?

cheers

Pricey!

If you buy one from a dealer (at least here in France) they are about £375 with the mounting plate, backrest, key 'cloned' etc; still rather expensive. However they may be less expensive in the UK. e-bay might be worth trying or perhaps advertise here or on the BMW Club forum if you are a member.
(I bought mine new, but had just managed to buy the vario panniers very cheaply from a friend who had had his 1200GS stolen.)
