Hi, I've noticed that the calculation time is out a little and I want to play with the settings of the average speeds, my questions is do I have to reload the maps onto the card to make the alterations effective in the Streepilot 111 unit or do I have to do something else?
Many Thanks
Noel

Noel:

You can change the average driving speeds used by MapSource on different road classes when MapSource calculates your route, but you cannot change the average driving speeds used by the GPSR itself when the GPSR calculates your route.

If you change the average driving speeds in the MapSource application, then create a route and download that route to your GPSR, the route will be preserved (meaning, it will remain as-is), providing that you have the same cartography loaded on both your PC and your GPSR. If you have different cartography versions (e.g. Version 7 on your computer, Version 8 NT on your GPSR), the route will be recalculated, and your GPSR will use its default internal speeds to do the recalculation.

You don't have to do any map reloading - the 'unique route' you create is sent to the GPSR when you download the route, not the maps.

Michael, what happens if while following such a route you deviate from it and the GPSR is forced to recalculate? Does the GPSR then revert to its own route preferences / avoidances / speeds or does it recalculate based upon the route preferences / avoidances / speeds that were used to create the (originally downloaded) route in MapSource?

Phil:

That is a tough question that I cannot provide an answer to.

To the best of my knowledge - which is not sufficient to answer the question authoritatively - the GPSR will recalculate the route using the default travel speeds contained within the GPSR, however, it will attempt to preserve the same 'path' that was taken when the route was created using MapSource.

I know that's not a great answer, but it's the best one I can give.

Hey, it may not be a great answer, but it's more than I knew :thumb

It would be pretty easy to find out.....make a small local route with a ridiculously slow speed attached to the route you upload.......1mph for example, over a 2 mile route then deviate from it a little and se what the ETA jumps to ;)

Let us know won't you ?? :)

There are realistic minimums to the speeds you can set on the various road classes in MapSource - for example, I think the lowest speed you can set for a highway is 31 MPH.

Thanks for all the info Pan you are a GPS God!
I don't suppose you can alter the firmware on the GPS unit to alter the average speeds? :)

A request has been made to Garmin to give us (riders) the ability to do this on future products. It would be useful for auto drivers as well - highway speeds in Germany are likely much faster, on average, than they are in Netherlands or UK.
