I just phoned BMW to request a "second" key as I only have 1 and they told me BMW dont hold replacment keys and I would have to pay for a second key

I stated that when I purchased the bike it only came with 1 key and 1 plastic wallet key as an emergency key and that I was told BMW would supply a second key upon request and they said "nope we have never done that, who told you that" lol

Looks like im going to have to pay if I need a second key

If you've owned the bike from new speak to the supplying dealer. They can sort it out for you by making a claim through the warranty dept but not if you've owned the bike for years and only just thought to mention it

@ Nice 'n' Fat I purchased the bike second hand (was only 12 months old with 800 miles on like new, but it only came with 1 key)

I've owned it 12 months now and ideally I need a spare key for some trips abroad I have planned, I guess ill take the chance of using the chippy plastic wallet one !!

If it only came with 1 x metal key and 1 x wallet key then the original owner either didn't request a 2nd metal key or has retained/lost it

They way he explained it to me was that if he ever lost the first original key BMW would simply send the "second" metal key at no cost .. I thought it was a bit to good to be true, ill just request another from the dealer £70 for 2 is good I guess

They now limit the number of replacement or additional keys allocated to one . BuMW Park Lane told me it is seven; I have no reason to doubt them. After that, it's new ECU time and a brand new key.[/QUOTE]

My supplying dealer used to say to me when I picked up my new GS's, "you are complaining there is only one key are you not". Always received a second key direct from Germany within a few days. My 2010 model came with 2 keys.
