Another design triumph?

Had 3 from 2005 to 2012...I guess I am lucky to be alive. I had 2 bikes with the servo system (1150RT, 2003), never had a problem.
It was the first batch of LC RTs that were the death traps. I believe that every example in the world was issued with a “don’t ride this bike” notice after there were fatalities caused by a rear suspension collapse. The bikes were all off the road for months, not weeks, whilst BMW developed a solution.

To be fair, they handled it pretty well in the circumstances. I guess they were particularly sensitive after the troubled intro of the LC GS and the Kevin Ash incident. It would have been better if they had built the RT properly in the first place though…

I remember that. Owners were offered different bikes and compensation . Huge incentives.
As, you say not quite as bad as PR generated when Kevin Ash was killed on the LC GS launch . Seem to recall a big cover up and BMW withholding information despite Kevin Ash’s widow pleading for BMW to come clean. Pretty disgusting behaviour.

To return to the original topic…

Said bikermate has returned the BMW panniers for his new GSA and replaced them with the new Bumot boxes, which fit directly into the BMW mounts, with no need for racks (clever of Bumot to spot the opportunity and adapt their product so quickly).

He has pronounced himself deliriously happy with the new solution, not least because his Kriega KS40 bag fits perfectly (which wasn’t the case with the BMW boxes) and not only is he unworried about the design/appearance of his new bike, he actually rather likes it. :D :D :D
