Another fault found by a GS-911

Trust you Ian.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have installed the full version on my PC(which has Aware in it) and done a full diag and the fault is there and this is what it says.

GS911 Version:904.1 Date:17/06/2009
10167: Output stage to Electric Fuel Pump faulty (Fuel pump electronics/driver)
The fault is currently present.

I can clear the fault but as I said in post 1 it comes straight back when the bike is started up.

Will try and find out just how friendly BMW dealers are and ask there advice.

I'd find a friendly 1200 owner who'll swap the FPC and see if the fault moves with the FPC or not.

I rang up a very helpful BMW dealer today; they were confident that this
problem is due to a corroded fuel pump controller, which can either be
cleaned or replaced (65 GBP). For those that don't know (like me!) it sits
on top of the fuel pump on the left side just below the tank (behind the
black plastic cover, on the 1200GS), and the earlier ones are highly prone
to this; they have since developed an upgraded one which is ok and hasn't,
they say, caused any problems.

Although the message 'Can Bus Off' is somewhat unhelpful and obscure,
giving the engineer that message helped point him straightaway to the
problem and save a lot of time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

let us know what the outcome was - I'm a little suspicious of the
comment of the dealer... here's why...

there are two fuel pump related Fault codes, the one refers to the
Fuel-pump itself (had one like this on Saturday with a friends bike):
"Electric Fuel Pump"

Then there is the Fuel-pump electronics ( the drive circuit that
replaces the standard fuel-pump relay)
"Output stage to Electric Fuel Pump"
this is the fault your dealer described to you...

and then there is the "fuse" that could be activated as a result of a
short-circuit and/or over-current to the Fuel-pump driver...
"Fuse for Fuel-pump, activated"

Took the bike in today to find out what the fault was.

10167: Output stage to Electric Fuel Pump faulty (Fuel pump electronics/driver)

Service guy gave me the keys back and asked what was the unit I had used as it was the fuel pump controller on it`s way out but there own BMW diagnostics equipment didn`t pick it up.

So one new FPC on a warranty claim and one happy owner that is glad he lashed out on the GS-911.

Thanks Slowdown for the offer to try your FPC.

Okay So how did they know the unit was on it's way out if thier machine didn;t pick it up?

Or did they reference the fault code to that fault?

Probably just looked at its sorry corroded state

As an aside, has anyone used their GS911 on an older non-can bike eg 1150GS/A yet ??

Yes.

The ABS2 on my 2000W R1150GS has not been working for some time. I've manually reset the ABS several times and Mike at Cardiff Motorrad had a look, without changing any components, last year. Every time we reset the code the fault returned.

At the time, Mike's diagnostic equipment and the GS911 could not interrogate the ABS2 so we didn't know which component was faulty.

Earlier this year, new software was released for the GS911 that talks to ABS2. So, a few days ago, I connected it all up and read the code - ABS piston fault. I then cleared the fault using the GS911 diagnostic.

I've made 2 trips since, riding about 150 miles and the fault has not returned. Hopefully the GS911 software has cleared some spurious data in the controller rather than this being a hardware fault, as that is likely to be expensive should the fault return.

{crosses fingers}

Don`t know how they new it was faulty as I didn`t talk to the mechanic, but mine didn`t look corroded what so ever.

They did how ever ask about the GS-911 and are going to look into one them selves. They were that impressed.:aidan

Sorted! :thumb2

So is it worth plugging in the GS-911 on a regular bases to see what’s going on? Seems so.

Only if something is not working or at regular service intervals. You know, like they would do in a regular workshop...
