I've had a search and still not sure what... so here goes:

R1100GS, 1999 bike, oil pressure light not going on. Bulb is OK, have cleaned the contact and switch, it did come on after cleaning with ignition on, went out when bike started, but has stayed off since. Getting 12.44 volts through wiring at ignition on, bulb still off.

Assume therefore it's the switch? or something else?

Bit of a bugger as off to North Wales on Wednesday, not sure motoworks can post that fast! Is this a common part a local motor factor would hold?

Thanks

Sounds like the switch, no idea whether it's a common part.

If it was me, I'd use the bike as normal while waiting for a replacement. I've never had a genuine low oil pressure warning in thirty odd years of riding and driving, the risk has to be pretty low for a trip or two.

If you phone motorworks and tell them you need the part urgently they will post it that day, first class if they have it in stock.

Hth.

I had a recent issue with an OPS on my 1100, was coming on as bike got hot and flickering all over the place (see my thread)
Anyhoo, Motorworks posted me a switch on the Tuesday after bank holiday, and it arrived on wednesday, excellent service. :thumb2

You could ask them to post it to your destination in Wales?

Disconnect the the switch and short the wire to earth with the ignition on. If the bulb comes on then your wiring etc. is all ok. Don't use anything other than a genuine BMW switch. A motor factor may be able to match it up but the quality of aftermarket switches and sensors is diabolical.

I think my oil pressure switch stopped working sometime in 2010. Pretty pointless item in the great scheme of things, as said in one of the above posts.

If the switch comes on due to low oil pressure it's too late anyway. The engine noise will let you know. :D

Thanks all. I understand it's probably pointless, but then good to know it's there all the same for a tenner. Replacement was a 5 minute job, I thought there would be some oil, but nothing residual, but then the bike had been on the stand for a couple of days.

Thanks all.. and I've a new oil question coming soon :blast
