Another software update...

(a) Were you updating your software using Garmin's WebUpdater software? In which case it should take well under a minute on a good broadband connection.

OR

(b) Were you using the 'My dashboard' tab on a 'My Garmin' to check for updates? The 'My dahboard' update of the software is a process that should take about two minutes on a good broadband connection. It then requires the device to be disconnected, turned off and restarted, then reconnected to the PC again to check the installation is complete.

To my inexpert eye, the difference between the two is that (a) simply updates software, whilst (b) updates the firmware, too.

Neither process (a) or (b) should require hours or an overnight run. Only map updates should need a lengthy number of hours to download to a PC and then a separate installation (again an hour or longer) into the device.

As you were not installing maps, I can only assume Garmin's own servers (or your ISP or PC) were on go slow that evening.

I was using the "My Dashboard", i have updated 2 or 3 times before and as you said its only a couple of minutes to download, install & restart the 660 but not this time :nenau

Possible there was a run on Garmin website, and too many people all trying to download the latest version at once.
Happened with the Apple site and the new iPhone if I remember correctly.
I downloaded in about 2 mnts max, and installed like a very fast thing.( On a Mac, and using Webupdater -a bit of Garmin/Mac software that does seem to work OK !!!)
All seems OK so far.
So Ian, is the 660 working OK with the v3.3 ? I mean did it actually install OK ?

Give it a go and / or ask Garmin what the differences are, if any.

Well I gave it a go.

First I checked with Webupdater, and apart from a few voices I've deleted, it told me I was running the newest version.

So I then went over to 'MyDashboard' and had a go. This time it told me an update was needed to my unit. So I followed the procedure of updating, disconnecting and reconnecting etc, and it still said I needed to update. Tried again with the same result.

My version numbers from within the 660 stayed the same between webupdater and 'MyDashboard', so I've come to the following conclusions:
a) The both apply the same update
b) Webupdater is more user friendly, and allow you to choose if you want to add any extras.

Well there you go. :beerjug:

I've updated the latest version using WebUpdater without any problem except that once loaded it then searches for anything else to download and it lists two items "GPS Chipset Type M" and "GPS Chipset Type M HotHix Data".

Has anyone else bothered with these, or does anyone know what they are?

These should increase the fix speed and accuracy of the GPS side of things.

From the name I'd assume that the Data one updates the satellite data, which can't be a bad thing ?

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
We recommend loading the chipset update for any model that our
engineering department has posted. For the most part, the chipset
update was done to improve satellite acquisition time".
