Another WC test ride - Underwhelmed

you're right, it isn't, but it was fun :D

however, i've been thinking....

the LC only has 10hp more than my twin cam GSA and it's heavier than the old GS, so why does it feel so fast?

the conspiracy theorist in me is wondering if they've chucked all the power right up the front at small throttle openings so it seem quicker than it is? the old bike has a notoriously slow throttle after all :nenau

.............

Well, the throttle response is now controlled by FBW so quite possible. Coupled with maybe slightly shorter gearing (dunno how the gearing actually compares :nenau) and a possibly lower flywheel mass, which would explain the quick revving nature and less 'plonk' low down (despite the higher torque figures) and you get an engine with a very different feel.

Whatever, it's all very academic, what you get is an engine that makes the new GS great fun to hoon around on :)

Well came up against one of these superfast LC's yesterday, expecting to get my arse whipped riding a lard arse 2006 105 bhp GSA two up with panniers and an almost full tank.

Well he tried, one up no luggage and built like a whippet, slowed right down just we left a village so using his lack of weight, up hill climb and 20 bhp to his advantage but he had to work real hard to leave me behind which ultimately he didn't.

If you want sport bike performance buy a sports bike, and for what its worth if I had been riding the K1600 I would have easily whooped his arse :aidan even in rain mode....:hide

I really wanted to tell the salesman that I liked it when I got back as he was bouncing around like an exited puppy in his anticipation of yet another sale and he looked genuinely surprised when I told him what I'd thought of it (if I'm honest, I quite enjoyed that bit :D).

Exactly what happened when I arrived back at the dealers. He did ask would I like a four hour slot, but to be honest, I won't be buying one and as much as I like riding someone else's bike, this one just ain't for me and I won't waste my time.

totally agree with above,i also returned bike early as i wasnt enjoying the experience, far to jap for me.each to his own thou.

Mmmmmm so what are you going to replace your GS with eventually then :nenau
as this new engine will be on all boxer twins

But the ethos of a GS isn't about speed & 125bhp??

Says who ?? :nenau

People bought into the easy going 1150's because as you rightly say, it suited what they wanted. That easy come, easy go, it's all about the journey thang (which I completely ... compleeetely get).

But shouldn't a bike evolve? Do you GS lovers really want BMW to get stuck in a time warp?

There's a woman at work who has big permed hair and still wears those Joan Collins power shoulder dresses :D. That was clearly her hey day, and she's never moved on. (Mind you, yer wanna see my wardrobe.. :blast).
I want to grab hold of her and Gok Wan her in the mirror - 'Look ... you look like Diedre Barlow ... you're sooo out of date ... move on, get current, adapt .. change .. '

The GS has (thank God :P) been Gok'd. That's good.

Embrace change people ... :rob

(JB .. you need Gok'ing ... :D)

also, when riding a demo bike i have usually found them faster than my own, possibly because i have absolutely no compunction about ragging the shit out of them, which is a very rare occurrence on my own bikes :augie

10 brake more is quite a lot, you'd have to spend quite a wedge to get 10 brake more out of a twin cam assuming you wanted to......but isn't the real difference 20 brake?
I thought the twin cam was rated at 110 whilst the liquid cooled is 130 brake?
I've had a ride on a liquid cooled model twice and whilst I can still relate to it as a descendant of my twin cam with many similar traits and characteristics but the way it builds speed and accelerates in any gear and at any engine speed is something my twin cam can't hope to match, my overriding memory of the performance of the liquid cooled model was not how fast it was but how effortless it felt getting to a given speed.

...... and then take it to Hilltop and get it mapped ... :green gri

I found my GSA and Rt (both TC) to be a little too lethargic, and found wanting on occasion.
I suspect that if I'd put a short action throttle (so there wasn't the need for 2 bites of the throttle) and liberated an extra pony or two then it would have been much better.

The toilets throttle feels like the many car 'sport' buttons that in dynamic mode give (ish) 50% throttle at 30% twist, road mode a bit less. Plus the lighter flywheel and the extra power, and it's very responsive and rattles along at a fair old pace. Far quicker than a TC.

But I think this engine is going to be great in the RT and R versions, but -for me- addresses the issues I had with my old GSA and RT.

My only complaint is she's noisy, but so is the wife and i love her too.

my mistake. it's 110 for the TC and 130 for the LC, so it's a 15bhp jump.

i don't want to get hung up on the power really. it's fun but a bit irrelevant to me. i was out on sunday on mine and gave it a big handful and it seemed more than adequate to me. i'm not sure i've even had mine flat out more than once or twice in 2 years.

i don't think i can us the old bikes power on the roads i enjoy, let alone the new bike. any fool can open the throttle on a big, relatively straight road, but it's been a few years since that's been a big buzz so where's the benefit for me? i don't really see it

oh look. i've got hung up on the power again :blast :D

i want to want one, but i don't.

not at the moment anyway :augie

The LC is 125bhp so the 15 up on a TC would be correct. Interesting to see what that equates to at the back wheel - who's booked in at Hilltop?

yes. that's what meant, 125 not 130 - typo. i even went to the trouble of looking it up :blast

Maybe this will be more to your liking?
