Another WC test ride - Underwhelmed

Nice one Giles.:thumb I wasn't expecting you to actually buy one at the end of the test ride, I thought you were just out for a jolly:eek::D:beerjug:

Nice report Giles and very eloquently put.
I've loved all my GS's and like yourself fully understand where the 1150 brigade are coming from, but I did miss that little bit of extra oomph from time to time.
For me, and what I want the new LC WC WB :nenauis almost perfect, and I sincerely hope that in 15yrs time I'm so happy with it that it's still in my shed, and I can come on here and tell these new upstarts with their new fusion powered hover over the rough stuff GS's,that the 2013 GS LC was the last of the true GS's :D

Ha! me too.

The reality is, it actually makes good economic sense. As good as the bike is, it's not 5k better than my current GSA.

But ... I pay 100 quid a month on a small loan (bought my WR450 with it) and am happy to accept that as a petrol head, I'll pursue my hobby, and it's going to cost me say £100 a month. If I was keen on fishing, maybe went to the pub every night for a couple of pints .... whatever your blokey hobby, I'm happy to write off 100 quid a month to do it.

The deal with BM is they'll take my GSA off me, give me back 4K, and I pay 100 quid a month for a bike that now has a warranty and is brand new. With that 4K I pay off whats left of my WR loan (£1,100 ?? I think) and I just carry on as normal. The £2,900 can pay for a bit of luggage, and sit in the bank .. pay for servicing ... and then do it all again in 2 / 3 years.
I'm happy to pay a monthly fee for that deal. :thumb2

For £100 a month, it's a no brainer.:thumb There are much more expensive hobbies out there, that's for sure.:rob

It is almost impossible to put a monetary value on these things - I traded in my 2010 27,000 mile twin-cam, probably got £1000 less than selling it privately and it cost me a few thousand to up-grade to the new LC - some would say that the new bike isn't worth thousands more than a 2010 twin-cam but to me it is, simples :)

How do you GS riders get on with the weather protection? Do you get noticeably colder in the winter? Wetter?

The screen on the Rt is in my opinion, probably the best out there. I haven't ridden the new Triumph, but it's certainly better than the Pan and the GTR.

Just because the two bikes share the same motor, don't be suckered in to thinking they will be similar. It's clever! How these manufacturers engineer soul into a bike I don't know, but the GS and the RT are poles apart in their character

Re getting cold, heated gilets are the way forward. Gone are the days of different seasoned jackets. Invest in an Exo heated jacket with the temperature controler. For me it was a Eureeka moment in terms of kit. If you ride all year it's another no brainer. :thumb2

A new LC for £100/month

Where do I apply?

So, you've cleared off your £100/month WR450 loan, got a spare £2900 and all the new LC is costing you is £100/month

Is that right, how does that work.................just off the BMW Motorrad website:D

2 tractors..........

The difference is, Giles won't own the bike at the end of the process unless he chooses the buy option.

At 100 notes a month, who cares if you technically own it - a great way pay for riding :thumb2

Just caught up with this Giles whilst sunning myself beside a Dutch canal......

Glad you liked it and even cooler the fact you're getting one, bet you can't wait :) oh, and the SM flick flacking resonated with me, that's one area where my 1200 is lacking, you can chuck it into corners like a SM but it hasn't got that instant oomph out of the corners that the WC has, defo more fun for out and out honing!

Still reckon you weren't going fast enough though to experience the turning in issues. ;)

Right, gotta go now, another one, just like the other one beckons....................

Whoooo !!

Just got back in from more test riding. (her indoors wanted a go on the back before I signed on the dotted line).

Like viewing houses, riding it again is not such a bad idea. So second time around I'm still happy.

Off on a bit of a tangent here ....
A few months ago I was having a chat with the boss of my local Honda dealer. The discussion was around hi tech electronic gadgetry versus good old fashioned engineering. The boss was waxing lyrical about Hondas ethos to engineering (any body ridden the VFR1200?? An awesome motor..) and that modern engine mapping modes and push button suspension management are expensive luxuries that most people will play with for 48 hours and then set once and probably never use again. At the time I was completely agreeing with him.
But now I'm not so sure. This afternoon I took out her indoors and instantly tweaked the suspension and the engine mapping. Putting the bike in rain mode gave it a soft lazy throttle response (and instantly defaulted to soft damping), as the roads we tried out moved away fron bumpy B roads to sweeping smooth A roads I tweaked it again to road mode (which tweaked the damping again..). Not only is that pretty clever, but I really can see me regularly using those functions. Dropped her off, tweaked the suspension again and when I got an itch, stuck it in dynamic mode. All on the move.

Yes Honda, good old fashioned engineering is second to none, and I still reckon Honda (probably) build the best motorcycles in the world. But push button mapping a gimmick?? I've changed my mind :D I don't think it's the one trick pony I did a few months ago :thumb2

JB ... I hear you! I guess we (me and BMW) are both winners, so whilst the finance isn't rocket science, I win 'cos I'd have been paying that sort of some monthly anyway, and they win 'cos in two / three years time I'll probably do it all over again. Their marketing success is tying me into their brand, which i can live with. :thumb

i don't believe you can "win" against corporate finance. they just fuck with your head so you think you've won :D

So what spec/ colour have you gone for then Giles?

Is this a TE with toys or a standard bike. A TE with spokes and crash bars etc is ouch on the invoice.

I wanted thunder grey, thought the blue looked great in the flesh. So I got a red one.

White is gash...

TE with spokes and crash bars ... :thumb2

Won't be available 'till June though ..

Plenty of time for other interim stuff to buy then. The Akra is needed for a start.

If you need a NAV IV and luggage you could end up with the biggest LC bill to date!

Then there's the TT goodies, crud catchers....
