Any of you Tossers ride a pushbike?

I've got to fess up. I've got several cassettes and ride a compact. I've got 12-25 (most used) a 12-27 and also (oh the shame) a 13-29.
In my defence I ride the 13-29 mainly in France where all of my rides comprise of multiple cat 3 and 4 climbs. In fact, pretty much the only way back to the house is via one or other of 3 different cat 4 climbs. At the end of a long(ish) hot ride I can sometimes be glad of a "get out of jail" gear.

There's also one climb near me which is only (according to Strava) a cat 4 climb... it's only 0.8 miles long but is an average gradient of 11.9% and supposed to hit around 30%max.... am I in my granny ring for that... you betcha:toungincheek

Oh, and I won't be seeing 65 again:(

Fair play to you then good effort

Can any of you tossers recommend a good sizing guide for road bikes? Yes I've tried Google but as ever, too much choice.

Just been to try out a Boardman in Halfords (actually very helpful ) but the one thing they won't let me do is take one out for a 10 mike ride. ;)

Can't decide between the L and XL both of which they had in stock for me to sit on. I'm 6'1" with a 33 inside leg and it feels as if I'm on the cusp between the two sizes so would want to get advice fro tried and tested sources.

I`m 6`6" with much longer legs than you and have an XL Giant so an L would do you stumpy ;)

Gone are the days of having 2" of seatpost showing out of your frame as most bikes have a compact frame

I'm 6'3" with 34" inside leg and bought a Boardman XL which (as far as I am aware) fits me just fine. I did (and still do) find it a long reach to the bars and had a lot of back ache (partly due to being 18+ stone no doubt) so fitted a shorter, adjustable bar stem. Now I'm an almost lithe 15 1/2 stone I'm going to try the original bar stem. I also replaced the seat with a nice fancy Italian gel one after the second ride.....

They have those big hills in Europe too. Sometimes they hold events called "races" too. Sometimes people called "professionals" ride these races over these mountains. These racers use 39 front small chain ring and no more than 25 on the back. Amateurs will often use "compact" chain rings on the front (that's you) with typically 34 on the front small ring.

I can't be arsed to switch gears in the front. I keep mine in the big ring at all times. :weights

I'm 6'-0" with a 32" inseam, and fit perfectly on a size 56 frame. I would think a 56 and 58 frame would both work for you, but I've always been told by bike fitters that if you're midway between two sizes, pick the smaller one.

Thanks for the info chaps. I think we're heading for size L but I'll go and have a play with the link. The horizontal stretch to the bars might be too much on the XL, in hindsight.

It felt counter intuitive choosing something that wasn't XL, if yoou know what I mean........:augie

I know what you mean. But when it comes to cycle clothing I went the other way and have to go up a size from normal - bloody form fitting lycra....:D

here is a quick guide, I always come out as a large frame but I ride a medium with a longer stem it just feels better

Old farts push big gears and therefore ride with a low cadence. Difficult to get out of bad habits.

These are excellent audax/winter/training bikes fitted with mudguards. You only need to fit a proper rear mudflap so that I can sit on your back wheel without getting covered in crap.

Jim, what have you registered as

Jim Tripp but there's nothing on there yet mate.

Still waiting to hear back from cycle scheme as to whether I can finish the hybrid early. If I can I think I will flog the hybrid, get a new road bike and in time buy a 2nd hand mountain bike as my mate rides on Dartmoor sometimes and that looks like something I'd quite fancy, nothing too difficult, nice long open trails.
