Any of you Tossers ride a pushbike?

I'm just warming myself up to the idea of buying a new bike.

The particular model I'm looking at retails at £1400 in the UK, but as I'm shortly off to the land of cycling (NL), I thought I'd have a look there and find that the same bike lists at €1499 (= £1225) there. If I buy one in Holland, it will, of course, be left-hand drive, but I can live with that.

:D

Question for the cyclists: How much different on the road would I find this to my Hybrid? Apparently it is set up for a more comfortable ride so the geometry isn't too radical. I like my hybrid but the bloke in the shop says this would be so much quicker and easier. Going to do the ride to work a couple of times next week and see how the current bike fairs before deciding whether to change it.

In January I switched from a hybrid to a road bike and was also worried about the more aggressive riding position on my slightly large and 47 YO frame.

Having. Probably done a thousand miles or so my worries were totally unfounded. I did try the new bike, researched the size guides and made sure it was adjustable. It's also worth getting a professional fitting and adjustment.

Although my hybrid was good quality, the road bike has better components and the carbon frame makes more of a difference than I expected.

Go for it!!

I have also just made full advantage of the Wiggle sale and bought a new carbon fibre road bike. Compared to my Boardman, the new bike has a more aggressive riding position however, I found it comfortable enough from the off and I'm 6'3" and 54 YOA. The biggest issue is the seat so I've just taken delivery of a Selle Italia Max Flite seat to try on it. Initial testing of the Ridley Helium framed bike shows an improvement of about 1.5mph on my average speeds and I've set a new mileage record (for me) of 53.5 miles which after only 12 months of cycling I'm happy with. Have also gone past a 20KG weight loss target so happy days.

I'm told that you have to train specifically for a 10 mile TT if you expect to see significant progress. For example, my sprint times have improved tremendously in the past two years. In sprints of 1-2 miles, I'm always ranked in the top 5 or top 10, beating club racers 30 years younger and 30 lbs lighter than me. I wrongly assumed that this huge increase in performance would also translate into huge increases in a TT race, so last weekend I took my TT bike out to a five mile course. The result? A pitiful 110th place on the Strava leader board - far behind other riders I routinely beat on shorter distances. The power graph tells the story: during the first two miles I was running strong, and I felt confident I'd be able to hold my 26 mph pace until the end. But after that point, fatigue rapidly set in and my power output dropped like a stone. By the time I crossed the finish line, it was all I could do to maintain a speed of 20 mph. :(

Personal Best Times
10m - 21.25
25m - 52.07
50m - 1-36-58
100m - 3-36-00

For TT training and racing a heart rate monitor is your friend. For example a 25mile TT I ride at 162bpm which I know from experience I can just sustain for 1 hour. For 10 miles I ride at 165 which I can only just sustain for 25 minutes. The heart rate monitor, being a measure of your output, doesn't care about wind or road surface or all the other factors that make judgement of pace difficult. Very important, for a 10 TT is to warn up covering at least 10 miles before the start.

I might have been interested in Wiggle, but you can't get your leg over first, can you?

That is very true but I did all the calculations before hand based on the geometry measurements on the website and I could at least steal some comparisons from my current bike. The rest of the decision making process was made with the 41% discount. Yes, a bit of a risk but a calculated one.

Interesting thanks.

I'm just warming myself up to the idea of buying a new bike.

Just bought a virtually unused Trek Madone 4.7.

I expect it to be faster than I can handle!

:D

ET. Comes from Cheshunt. Famous sister. Announced retirement on Saturday. :nenau

Thought she might have cut you a deal on her bike.:thumb2

I think Emma Pooley's bike might be a bit too small for you.:rob

Did she retire because there's a gold postbox at the end of her road and the second-half of the name of the local sports centre is the same as hers?

There you go. You knew all along really.:augie

You're getting into this bike lark, aren't you?:thumb

Your saddle needs adjusting the front tip and rear should be parallel to the floor.

Went out and did two hours today, weekend charity cycle coming up soon...

That's the eBay photograph - it hasn't arrived with me yet.

Was going to do a few miles on the old girl tonight, but there's monsoons threatening and I'm a wuss .....
