Any reliability issues with GS

I bought my 2010 twin cam thinking I was buying the most reliable bike in the world.
Not long afterwards I was soon disillusioned on hearing about all the GS's problems.
I was reading on here about extended warranty, I have never had extended warranty on any bikes I have previously owned.
So I sold it on whilst it still had some warranty and was worth a bob or two.
I would never buy another.

Best regards Stretch

One good reason for not reading forums, seems a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the tails of woe on here, unless .................

Did you have any issues with your GS Stretch?

Hi Bob, I had my fuel gauge strip replaced three times and covered 12K miles on it with no other issues, however, as above was not prepared to start taking out extended warranties, and worrying about final drives.

Enjoyed my short time on adventure bikes and I hope to acquire another as soon as funds are available, something smaller and cheaper, maybe a Tenere.

Best regards Stretch

Hello Stretch,

Nothing major that stopped the bike from running then. I think BMW have moved away from the strips and gone back to the older style floats they used previously.

Its easy to be swayed by the doom and gloom you see on the internet, but your mention of funds suggests that you perhaps had other reasons for disposing of the bike when you did?

You are worried about BMW reliability but are seriously considering Ducati and Moto Guzzi? :pullface

From what I hear these days, Ducati & Moto Guzzi are both very reliable. Sadly, all I hear about BWMs are horror stories

Feck. go on frighten me then. I've just bought one of the last Tiger 955I's and am genuinely scared of the figures you are about to post. On the plus side the tiger goes like stabbed rat, and sounds rather nice too. Oh and just bought 2 new headlight relays so I can wave goodbye to the one eyed tiger effect, and see where I'm going at night.......

From Experiance and unless they have had a change of heart and subsidise the 12k service, it cost me £850.00 3 years ago was told it would be the same for the 24K sold within a month and had a 1200 Gs 07 for the last 3 years problem free

I was swayed Bob, deffo, it certainly made me sell it a lot quicker than I would have done, like I say the warranty still had six months and I thought, due to all this sh!t I would cut and run.
Re Funds, that was not the reason I sold my GS Bob, as soon as it was sold I went out and bought another brand new bike.
The funding issue now, is that I intend to buy another adventure bike whilst still keeping my new road bike.

Best regards Stretch

Great, put your money where your mouth is :thumb2

Then come back in three years and tell me what the cost of ownership was ;)

I've had bm's for the last 28 years and never had any problems and still got 2 of them .If you believe every thing you read you would never leave your house or eat and drink anything .If you fancy a 1200 get one .:thumb2:thumb2
Cheers C'n'C

off topic, but i need to ask: is your username the product of a password generator?

pronounciation is proving tricky

Strange site this? I'm increasingly wondering why it's called what it is as an ever increasing amount of those posting on it just seem to rubbish the bikes it's all about.
I've had three GS'. An 1150 and two 1200 GSAs. All have been (and are being) well used and all have served well. I've had one or two parts needing replacement - but what automobile doesn't?
The GSA is a bit of a compromise bike - it does a number of things pretty well: And that's exactly why I bought one and appreciate it. Bottom line is that I can travel long distances in relative comfort with lots of kit, and when I want to give it a bit of welie or get the pegs down it seems to do that quite well too.
Finally, my current dealer in Norwich is helpful and not extortionate with his prices - people should just listen to some of the horror stories about some other bike dealers before you knock all those dealing with BMWs.

Interesting philosophy , I can only guess that you apply that concept to all items you purchase ? Don't you research first , than act ?
If you do a search on Google you will find that many women develop faults , which can be hugely costly as well:rolleyes:. But you still marry them:D

Going back to the main question. Over 6 years I had R1200 enginded models ( 3 RT of 05 vintage and 1 GSA 06 , first RT was brand new) and a total of around 70000 miles. One FD seal ,replaced gratis , a few bulbs. One of the RT suffered for some unexplained fault ( would cut off in traffic ), but fixed by the dealer.
GSA had corrosion on the wheels , the RT's had pitting on the forks but no corrosion at all ( I don't ride in the winter ).
And I am with one eye on an 1600GT ,yes customer care could improve. But my dealer ( Bahnstormer ) is really good. There are plenty of independent mechanics out there who can service your bike , if you want to reduce cost.
Ride and enjoy:thumb

Indeed, there are a lot of customer's who are happy with BWM and these are ones that have either never had a problem or have had a problem dealt with properly, then there are others who have experienced a problem that has not been satisfactorily resolved and vow to never go there again. Personally, I was for a long time in the first camp but now sit firmly in the second camp. Probably the same with most makes though

I would prefer a site where you can see the truth, warts and all, rather than sites like Triumphrat.net where anyone who is negative about Triumph gets banned and their posts removed.

At least you can make up your own mind based on full information rather than get the rose tinted view.

I may well do in the spring. Why do you think Cost Of Ownership is so high?

Go and talk to any independant Ducati mechanic and find out what really needs doing rather than what the Ducati service schedule says. They normally forget things like needing to regularly lift the cams to ensure that they aren't scored. Mine would regularly set me back several hundred pounds a year. Couple that with cost of tyres and depreciation and you'll get an idea. :(

I don't know much about Moto Guzzi ownership however I do know you'll be budgeting for a new clutch and high depreciation. You may, or may not, live near a dealer. I do but I wouldn't buy a bike off them ;)

People on here regularly bemoan the depreciation costs and servicing but there are plenty of independants around for BMWs and, whilst new 1200s will depreciate, it doesn't seem all that bad to me. :nenau

Don't be taken in by some salesman's patter on any bike, do some research :thumb

It was a Guzzi I was thinking of (although the multistrada is tempting). There is a dealer near me and as I buy it as a company bike and then buy it off the company after 2/3 years, oddly enough depreciation will work in my favour. I think depreciation looks bad over the last few years as theyve been updating all their models 1100-1200-4v heads. That may settle down now....unless there's water cooled on the horizon!
