Travelled up from home to east London on Sunday with my BMW top box loaded with a brand new pair of trainers to change into, almost new pair of Boxercup gloves, disc lock and a pot of the wifes finest Ruby Murray only to discover on arriving at my destination the top box gone!!! :(

I had'nt encountered any sleeping policemen...ramps...jumps etc but still the two locating bits (!?!) were broken off allowing the box to jump off at will...Hoping that it did'nt hit anyone whilst in flight!

Having called Mike at South London BMW yesterday for a price on a new one and enquiring if there was any comeback from Bracknell he informed me that it has happened in the past and BMW would replace the box but not fork out for the contents...whilst I 'm relieved that I won't have to fork out for a new box I'm still a bit pissed off that I'm down nearly £250 on the contents..

Anybody else out there had the same thing happen?

:hapybnce: :jes

Known fault, that's why BMW are buying you a new one.............you could try the small claims court for your contents loss or your house insurance

I was'nt laughing at the time Johhnyboxer...I'd been looking forward to that curry all day!

Had my top box replaced last week as the bottom of it had cracked causing it to wobble around on its mountings!

Wollastons changed it for a new one, which had been revised as its a well documented issue.

Do a search you'll find plenty. :thumb

Make sure you get the revised box with the lip on the bottom.

I'm sure someone will have the part number? :nenau

Mine was knocked off by a falling rock as we were riding down from the Bielsa tunnel in the Pyrenees. It ended up aquaplaning alongside me as I slowed down. After retrieval it fitted back on fine! Never knowingly needed ABS until that moment, as another rock had just hit my front wheel and I panic braked! Scary moment that all ended OK.

Long shot I know, but it may be worth you sticking your name, address and contact number inside the lid ... just in case it ever comes off again AND an honest person picks it up. There are still a few about.

How long is it going to take you to stick a label inside the box .. 20 seconds? Worth a try though. :thumb

For sale

One pair of trainers

One pair of Boxercup gloves

Disk lock

One empty curry pot....slurp! :thumb

Oh and one slightly battered top box

Fell off the back of a GS :D

I'm just back from St Leonards on Sea..... had a lovely curry there :P

I had 3 of these fly off the back of my 1200GS, both off the back seat and the rack. It's all on GSER somewhere. I never actually lost one, as the courier was kind enough to chase after me and let me know that my top box was in the middle of the road outside Waterloo station.

I did lose about 5 locks, as they come out if you stare at them hard enough.

BMW gave me a full refund for the variobox, mounting plate etc...
It's just really, really crap and expensive kit.

- top boxes flying off
- known fault with box
- precedent set by BMW replacing box, and implied liability accepted by BMW
- unreasonable of them to deny you the value of the contents...warranty failures inevitably have consequential damages.

I mean, imagine if the forks collapsed and the cause was proved to be to a warranty issue....you would no doubt have been injured as a consequential damage, and BMW (via the dealer) would have to cough up for this. No question. So your top box contents are no different.

Therefore threaten to sue for contents, and if that doesn't work, issue a writ using the small claims court system - all easy to do and well explained online. You'll win...

I'd be really really pissed off with a dealer who didn't forewarn me of a real known problem like this - and then NOT offer to pay for the contents.

Hope you've got new for old house insurance and £50 excess. :nenau

Thanks ,just checked mine and the mounting is cracked :( thats the second one in 18 months, not good at all.

Fall off twice, but no under warantee anymore, so dealer says "Sorry but..." :spitfire

I´ll put the box on a friend´s GS that just bought it a few monther ago, and will try to pass it as warrenty..

(Thanks god the dealer in that city of Spain ( I will not mention...) is not UKGS, forum reader...)

Whereabouts is it cracking? Any photo available?

I'm new to the bike and have just ordered a Vario topbox. I think I'll be looking at it with a view to adding an extra securing device.

Al :D
