My mate has a new S1000 XR. When starting from cold the revs sometimes go to 2,000 plus and in gear the bike will pull up a ramp from his basement. BMW are saying there's no fault showing. Is this a known issue ?

My Ten 1 would often rev quite high when starting from cold - cant recall the actual numbers - but it soon calmed down
I reckon it is a thing with in line 4s or 4s in general as my Ducati Streetfighter is the same and reeves high for a few seconds on start up.
2k isnt high revs for a XR if you think about it in relation to how they spin up to 11K +
do you all have stepper motors , controlling your t/over speed ?
Guzzi's ... cold temperature , rpm's high on startup , and falls away as it warms .
pull up at lights with clutch in , in gear rpm stays at 1800 , and slowly drops to 1200 .
at lights in neutral , pull clutch , select gear rpm will rise to 1400 ish , when air temp is low.
I'd say this is normal. Having only owned in line jap 4s (until buying a 20 year old GS 1150 recently), the efi ones I've had all start at highish revs 1800-2000 for couple of minutes ( depends on outside temps) then settles to normal tickover. It's the same as choking a carb bike, revs rise until choke backed off.
This is a Euro5 "feature" as the cat has to get up to temperature in a certain time so you get a fast tick over when cold. I had this removed on mine when I flashed it (Bren Tune) as it got on my nerves
