Anyone test-ridden the new 1250 GS yet ?

To me a GS is a comfortable sport-bike for the road !

Nah mate.....that's called a MULTISTRADA!

A GS? Sports bike? You do say "To me" and why shouldn't you be entitled to your own opinion....even if you stand alone

Even if the GSA had 200bhp and 189 mph top speed.... how would you stop all that weight?

Be careful what you wish for :D

To right!

Precisely. It always bemuses me to hear all these pub-hero types talking about 160mph performance when most of the time you can't use more than half that on the roads safely, or legally not to mention it being a pretty pointless thing to thrash a bike like the big boxer as if it were an out an out sports bike. It isn't...never was and never will be. It is what it is, a great all round capable machine with more than enough go for 90% of riders. If you want 160mph capability then a trip to Nurburgring or some track days are the best way to do that.....safely...on a proper sports bike...or go buy a KTM 1290 (but forget touring in quite as much comfort or with as much stability 2-up with luggage if you do). Adventure is a personal thing. To some, world travel ticks the boxes. To me (and I suspect a majority of UK riders) a European tour once in a while and regular long rides to places in the UK be that the Lake District, Snowdonia or the Scottish Highlands all tick my box as being adventures because there are still a lot of places within the UK I'd like to explore or return to, preferably on two wheels in glorious sunshine! (doesn't happen much does that Lol).

I agree with all of the above, however having had two boxer twins in the last three years, I kind of fancy a 1290 experience. My only gripe is insurance premium cost and now you mention stability thing. When does that become apparent, at what speed as wife and I do two up day trips etc, and I will certainly have them metal things attached to the sides/top...

Went on a tour with a mate who has one this year. He says it started getting scary between 70 and 80mph no-matter where the suspension was at and wouldn't push it past that. Not so much of an issue with their little curvy sport panniers but it sure as heck was with the larger ones. Comfort was also poor Heat coming up from the top of the engine was an issue and he had to add a small air cushion to the seat and something resembling half a skinned bear chucked over the top (LoL) which given the fact it was meant to be a sport-tourer/adventure bike, is pretty pi** poor. On short (sub 100 mile) jaunts it was epic...fast, aggressive and licence busting territory...mpg not great either. As a two up tourer, seriously, the GS or GSA are a far better proposition.

I watched with interest another other guy's you tube vid recently about his 1290 superduke GT. Chopping it in after just a year of ownership as he's fed up with the vibes, low speed issues through town (tall geared, vibey and snatchy at low revs...partially the Euro4 on/off fuelling issue many KTMs appear to suffer with) and he's gone through a few tail light clusters as the mounts keep cracking with the vibes. It appears that they are perhaps not the all-rounder that they were meant to be. The sort of bike you'd love to ride (who wouldn't?) but everyday ownership doesn't seem as attractive, at least not in the UK.

I had a test ride yesterday whilst my bike was in for service. I spent an hour on a-roads and a short motorway section around Manchester.

Initial impressions compared to my 2017 Rally:

Engine is a bit smoother and has more grunt, not huge but noticeable.
Quick shifter is smoother, up and down.
Engine note at tick-over is different, with slight ticking/tappet type sound.
TFT is very nice.

The most practical improvement is the revised routing of the exhaust headers making them less vulnerable to damage, especially off road.

In summary, great bike, but not enough of a difference to make me want to upgrade.

Apart from the TFT you are on the ball. Found the TFT occasionally when the sun was behind me the display was invisible. The engine is also quieter, which means that I will consider the RT when it comes out with a new body work. Also less gear changes.
Incidentally the standard GS is now £2000 more than my was two years ago. So I am out, unless they will bring out an 1250S:cool:

Rt already in showrooms, new “belly pan” trim a slightly revised lcd display apart from that, there isn’t much different

Warlord it does not need to have 200 hp but you are right about the weight.
Perfect would be a S1000XR with driveshaft, more TORQUE,TL and boxer that protect rider & bike in case of a accident !
Like I said I have had not the chance to ride the new 1250 yet and maybe it is already this bike with more TORQUE than 1290 KTM and 1260 Duc already...but a GS with 17" front,220 kg wet,150hp 9000 rpm / 143 nm 6000 rpm would be all to wish for:thumb
R1250XR
But as it is I rather have a 1250 GS over a S1000XR,1290 SD-GT or 1260MS !
Superior TORQUE & power up to 8000rpm,load separating TL suspension, driveshaft, boxer, top loading boxes...the other stuff like another 1000 rpm more on top for another 10-15 hp,17" f-w and 50 lbs less would be icing on the cake...:thumb as the current 1200 is already the best sportbike for the ROAD ! Especially if it gets twisty and bumpy...

He’s already made it obvious he’s a complete fruit loop. ;)

The postings are obviously done at medication time when the nurses are looking after the other inmates.

Somebody should tell this bloke that it's not a sports bike...he had me fooled! :thumb2

My 1290 has been stable at 135 mph 2 up with panniers. It does help getting the spring pre load set right for your weight prior to making other pre load changes. This is a dealer job. 5mm extra pre load worked great for me.

I’ve just done a 3,600 mile tour with a mate on his GS, fuel consumption was pretty similar on both bikes over the trip though the GS was very slightly economical.

The GS is more comfortable on one up or two up but less exciting. My GS owning mate misses the rush of his old 1290.

I hope the next generation, is bound to be an update version with a new bodywork in the next 2/3 years.

Zoltan I is probably save to say that the 1250 is the GS for the next 3 years and in 2023 BMW shows the all new generation of boxers for their 100th anniversary;E-5 quiet and cleaner than a fart like the in 1993 all new R1100 boxers were :( but probably lighter than the current ones because incorporation of more CF parts (maybe even frame).
Just remember when the aircooled 1200 got new bodywork in 2008...In 2010 the new upgraded TC engine and the all new LC came in 2013.In 2023 the current line is 10 years old, time for a all new generation...Who knows if the EU bankster union survives and comes out with even more ridiculous emission regulations the cc goes up to 1300 or 1400 cc to give us at least the current hp/nm numbers because I can't see a 600 cc GS with turbo like cars had to go to comply with the idiots in Brussels...

Interesting....

You better sleep it off, I am sure it’ll look and sound better in the morning after a few coffees....

Pictures please, or it never happened! (Bike and coffee that is)

Akra looks good. Just needs the silver blades blacked out, the cylinder covers painted black, and remove the rear hangers, then job done.:green gri

Not the best pics.

Have come across these last night on BMW website. They are HP parts and due to be available to order from around January.

Agree, but leave hangers where they are as he might be carrying pillion.
By the way there is a law for which you could get done for.
If your motorcycle provides a seat for a pillion it must have pillion pegs and vice versa.

For black bits......See my post above......
