As the post says, perhaps I'm missing something.

Today on the Buckingham ring road/bypass a GS-LC came up behind me with Aux Lights mounted low on the bike (engine bars?) and therefore pointing upwards.

Painful for me in the car infront and bloody awful for anyone coming the other way.

Please enlighten me as to why this is a good idea?

It's not a good idea to have them wrongly adjusted - that's down to the rider in question.

The reason why it may be a good idea is that studies have shown that the resultant triangle of lights is more noticeable to drivers than a headlight alone.

As someone who was hit by a SMIDSY driver just a few weeks ago I have fitted them now and found people take note (and flashed me a couple of times until I got the angle correct).

I was not a fan before (bit to Ewan & Charlie for my liking) but experiencing what happens when someone doesn't see you has changed my mind! :rob

Better to be seen than to see better...

Just saying by mounting them low they had to point up, made no sense to me and TBH pi55ed me off.

I think the point being that you noticed the rider. Sure, it was annoying, but I’d rather annoy you than get knocked off. Particularly useful when filtering IMO. I have mine on all the time and have no intention to stop using them.

No reason they have to point up, regardless of where they are mounted. I have mine on my engine bars and have them angled slightly downwards, but they still make a noticeable difference when they are switched on. Even angled slightly down they will still be visible from a distance. Yes they will then be less visible when very close to other road users, but hopefully they will have done their job by then.

your not alone OP....i ride a GS. One particular day I had a GSA behind me, with Aux lights on full blast and some of these large after market ones ,Clearwater is it ?. absolutely ridiculous the way he was trying to be seen. It looked like a space ship on wheels was on the road that day..he prob thought he was so cool with all these lights on , i thought what a knob head

Did you see him?
Yes?
STFU then as he got to where he was going without some cockwomble in a cage having a new bonnet ornament.

Really don't matter what people think , if you see them, job done ,bit like loud exhausts, marmite.

They didn't have to point up at all - they pointed exactly where the rider wanted them to point, surely?

Badly adjusted in this case, but they most definitely make a bike more visible, and the triangle effect definitely works for me, much easier to pinpoint movement and closing speed if you have multiple light sources on the bike.

Even if they're mounted low down, they don't have to be angled so they dazzle anyone. I fitted some on my GS engine bars and set them up on my drive so they pointed to the road around 6-7m in front of my bike.

I never got flashed or noticed anyone in front of me adjusting their mirrors but did think people saw me more with them on.

I don't know if I have sensitive eyes but hate being dazzled especially by twats with their 'look at me' fog lights on when it's not foggy.

Being seen i agree with but blinding other drivers with the equivalent of main beam is un necessary and dangerous, i have aux lights and they do attract attention being Led without causing offence,
i want to be seen more not just be a wall of glaring light causing others be at risk,

Think we may need a list of meanings..

STFU - please be quiet
Cage - motorised conveyance, normally four wheeled
Cockwomble - silly man
Bonnet Ornament - Vajazzle
HammyUk - Unnecessarily aggressive keyboard warrior (normally decorated with a vajazzle)

I wish I could find it agan, but I remember reading a study that showed that if lights are too bright and dazzle it makes it far more difficult to see the movement making them look further away and therefore more likely a car would be to pull out.

You really need to grow up. There is a hardcore of cockwombles on here, just like you, who simply fail to understand that although aux lights are a good idea, you need to use them responsibly. I suggest it is you who need to STFU and get your lights adjusted correctly.

What utter b.....x. One day one of you idiots with aux lights will blind an oncoming driver who might just swerve into either your path or some other poor sod. Grow up and act a bit more responsibly rather than piss everyone off and give us all a bad name.

i saw him because he was riding behind me ...so My Cockwomble bonnet was left in as it was before he lit the planet up

They aren't that bright, and why would they swerve into the path Of anything!? Just advert your eyes, being seen outways any moaning codger, and yes, they should be aligned correctly.

Not that bright ? Is that the aux lights or you? Perhaps the comments from other bikers saying how bright they are have passed you by - not that I’m surprised.
