Is the aux power socket unique to bmw or is it an universal standard size, only previously aware of the normal cigarette lighter size in cars

do most people buy an adapter to covert the outlet to cigarette size or is there enought equipment, ie heated vests, gps, compressors etc that run this smaller size

any help, opinions, or experencies appreciated

It's commonly known as a Powerlet plug and socket. I believe that Triumph also use it and it's used on tractors. It's a much better design than a cigarette lighter - much less prone to come loose as a result of vibration. BMW dealerships usually sell the plugs, although they tend to be expensive and there's at least one vendor on here who stocks them.

DIN socket, also used on four wheeled tractors.

Easy enough to buy converters that go up / down so you can use on either.

As other treads say hella sockets are also used on heavy plant and sometimes motorhomes and caravans, so fittings are easy to get hold :)

More than 5 amps trips the canbus trip IYSWIM.

Nippy Norman, and others, sells the connector, I doubt it's a BM specific connector, but you can buy them from the dealers.

No that one is specifically for GPS. The one under discussion is under the seat on the nearside of the bike.

The Hella plug / socket is designed for up to 16A

original question was re the outlet under the seat, then i asked as a second question re the "GPS" outlet,

Is this correct only a GPS can be connected here, how does the canbus know it is a gps or otherwise

You can put any type of connector on there or you can buy the special plug from BMW. The reason I say it is specific to a GPS is that the third wire was for the "Dead reckoning" used on one of the earlier BMW/Garmin GPS units. The other two wires are +12V and -12V. I don't know what the ZFE unit trips this socket for over current. So as long as your within this all will be well.

I'm talking about the headstock socket here. :thumb2

ok thanks for that, its wired in via the proper bmw socket with wire number 2 [ blue/green ] being the old speed pulse wire not needed anymore so it should be ok :)
