Hi,

I've got a 1200 with 2000 miles on the clock. After a couple of 1150's to compare it with I'm surprised how much vibration there is between 4,500 and 5,500 rpm. It's sooth as silk below and above that range but the harsh buzz I get is smack on my normal motorway cruising speeds. It was a tiny bit better after the first service but given all the hype about balance shafts and silky smooth engines I'm dissapointed that it's worse than the older bikes! I did ride a demo bike which seemed ok but didn't get a chance to sit with it on a motorway at 90-odd for an hour.

Do they all do that guys?

If not, what's going on or does it need another 20,000 miles running in? I assume the throttle bodies were re-balanced at the service, especially as I mentioned the vibes then.

Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Hi,
The 1200 is smoother than 1150 when correctly set, in my opinion.
I don't think you can rely on the dealer to accurately adjust the butterfly sync, better to do that yourself. You can check it first by closing the throttle and listenening for double click (not sync'ed) then adjust rhs cable to get single click as both b'flys close simultaneously - (sync'd). For more accurate results, you need a manometer or twin-max.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bin, I just had my throttles resynched this week as the vibes made me think I had a faulty spark plug and/or dodgy handling mid-corner, it seemed to pick up roughly and the engine braking was scary. With the throttles now synched correctly it just glides beautifully, the throttle response is crisp and the engine braking is gentle. It rides completely differently. In a word "Transformed".

It was serviced 1000 miles ago but the dealers were in a hell of a rush so I suspect they may have elected to skip the balancing at that time, and now that it is balanced it is much, much sweeter.

I believe that to synch the 1200 throttles yourself, you need to do something to the idle steppers as the GT1 is used to "park" them when the dealers set the butterflies up on the cables. Without this, the computer fights against the cable adjustment by moving the idle steppers and negating your adjustments. If anyone has a DIY method of synching the 1200 throttles, can they post a link or enlighten me please, I would like to know how to set mine for future servicing.

EDIT: I just found this link, says it all.

Hi Rick,

Have to say my "12" does seem to be smoother now than first new. Like you compared to the 1150 it was like "a bag of spanners" and as you say worse at just motorway cruising speed :spitfire (I did like the overdrive on my 1150)

Now have 14,500 miles on and it is a lot smoother, do not think I have got use to the vibes etc. The dealer Service Manager did say to me “The 1150’s do rattle and bang on tick over (character?????) but get smooth when running at speed. The 1200 is smooth at tick over but rattles/vibes at speed…. until a few miles are put on”

Think that sums it up for me! More miles needed :clap

That's what I tell the :bow wife!

Hi again,

Since I read the replies to my post I've balanced the throttles at 4000 rpm as suggested (hey, don't those downpipes get hot quickly though.... ).

They were WAY out, so I begin to doubt that they were even looked at at the 600 mile service, bloomin wasters!

Anyway, the bike is transformed and is so much smoother I'll maybe even clean it this w.e. as a reward.

Thanks for the info' and advice guys.

Rick
