I have just cracked it!
I registered the Zumo (again) via Garmin website rather that via Garmin Express and hey presto went to my maps and voila the detail button and codes were there!!!!

Agreed. I suppose, in hindsight, it is obvious. When you register via garmin express there is no requirement to log in to your garmin account (or create one if your a new customer). That said all the blurb advises to do this and after using garmin express and logging in my new device is listed but no map codes.

It appears to me that 'registering your new device via express registers it with your computer and later, when you sign in your computer indicates to your garmin account that this device is 'linked to this computer and the user' but not 'properly registered'.
Anyway. Mystery solved.
