Can anyone tell me if i disconnect the battery completely will i lose any Data and if so will it need to be set up at the Dealer, or does it just reset itself when reconnected.

Depends how long it is disconnected, 10 minutes or so will be fine. If you are taking it out for winter then the backup power source will fail and then a trip to dealers will probably be needed.

It will bring up your service reminder, and need a trip to the dealer for reset.

Is this some new stuff that the F800GS has got? My K1200R of 2005 was fine, so was my R1200GS of 2004. If it is, then can you please point me to some more info? Thanks!

Sadly some idiot at the design stage never thought that the battery on an adventure bike might go flat, or be disconnected.

This means that if the voltage drops too far, or you remove one of the cables to fit something like a GPS power lead, the [SERVICE] warning come up. What's even more stupid is that they can only reset for a set period, so it will then come on at the wrong time or milage, and you have to monitor your milage 'manually' which defeats the point of having it there in the first place!

It doesn't if battery not disconnected for too long, I have disconnected my battery a couple of times to fit additional equipment.

I was of the assumption it always threw the 'SERVICE' light on as soon as you remove the battery power (thanks for informing us this is a misnomer). So when I add stuff to my battery I make a further connection to the battery terminals to keep all the leads happy whilst I add power leads. Just in case anything slips or falls off.

All it does other than that is clears your trip-logs if you have full computer system. Not a huge annoyance but you do need to monitor when your service was due/is due.

Alternatively get a GS911 Diagnostic tool, works on all BMW's with canbus socket.

Thats a good find!

Looks like a good system to use to self diagnose and reapir (where possible) *begins hiding money for one for the F800 (yet to purchase,,, may 2011)*

I disconected my battery for a nano second and the service light came on, be careful. Dealer wanted to charge me to reset even though it takes them no time to do. Managed to persuade them as i bought some stuff but alternatively just ignore the light till next service.
