Battery draining

Bike is an '08 GSA. I thought I had a duff Odyssey battery and bought a new one however, it seems that's not the case. The battery is being drained by something on the bike whilst the ignition is off. The new Odyssey has been drained from full to 4.75v over two weeks. Battery is now being charged up.

I have not touched anything on the bike for a while other than replace the battery and this is a new phenomena. There are quite a few accessories, Zumo660, lights, extra power, horns etc and these are all connected to a seperate fuse box with an inline fuse. First plan of attack will be to take that fuse out and monitor the drain. If that is successful then I can then do the same circuit by circuit as all of the accessories have individual fuses.

I always struggle with these sorts of things especially where electrickery is concerned when things that have been fine for 4 years suddenly go wrong. What sort of things should I be looking for that's standard on the bike if its none of the accessories? There is a factory alarm fitted but its never set when its garaged. I have a multimeter and GS911 on hand for the testing.
 
I'm sure the drain will be gone once the accessories are disconnected.
It's a process of elimination then to find the culprit
 
The zumo mount has a voltage reducer in it, I think 12-5v? That may be the culprit.

I'd have that disconnected when bike is idle, or have it wired through a canbus connection.

Borrow a multimeter with current flow facility and with the fuses removed - jumper yher meter across the terminals

Would also check the power socket is switching off after 60 sec. Have an 09 and similar thing happened. traced to socket staying on even though nothing plugged in. Disconnected everything from battery over night and seemed to reset itself and been ok since.
 
I had the same problem on my hexhead a few years ago, pretty sure it was the Zumo 660, dealer changed where it was connected and sorted it.
 
If the accessories aren't the problem you may have a diode failure in the alternator allowing leak back, not unusual in car type alternators. I'm not certain if it stays in circuit with the bike ignition off though, easy to check if you have a half decent multimeter.
 
I have had the same problem on my 2011 TC.
After a bit of checking and fiddling about it was the Zumo 660 draining the battery.
Remove sat nav = remove problem :thumby:
 
Thanks for all the input - I can check a few of these tonight. I have a Zumo 660 mount (the 660 lives elsewhere when not in use) on the bike and that is connected to the fuse box. I fitted that several years ago but this is a newly developed fault. The OEM power socket has been removed although it's still wired in to the loom and lives under the tool tray. I have fitted a separate power socket direct to the fuse box in place of that. Hopefully it will be one of the accessories and therefore easy to trace and cure. Thanks again.

Ive had this happen on a Yamaha though in my case the V-reg boiled the battery.

Best option is to get a fuse box (electronic or blade type) and wire all accessories through it. Power the new box direct from battery via a relay. Use a live with ignition supply to switch the relay.

Just to confim

Is the fuse box relayed ie is the power removed from the fuse box when the ignition is off?

If not then your accessories will continue to drain

I have a centech 5 fuse box coming off the main fuse box which has its own relay

So power is only sent to it when bike is on

Currently have satnav, usb sockets, aux lights fitted to it, no drain, oddessy battery fitted

Yes the fuse box is relayed - triggered by the rear light. There's a seperate fuse off the battery too. Good point that it can't be live with ignition off unless the relay is stuck (if that's possible?)
 
That the limit of my ability chum and I used to be a sparky by trade 😕

You have a parasitic drain problem.
Do this and you will easily find the draw.

if the Zumo is plugged into the accessory socket pull the plug out and see if the problem goes away.
 
apart from the fact that there are no fuses on a 1200 (gsa fog lamps excepted)

I'm sure that the OP uses a fuse panel for all his consumers, from a switched supply?

So - could be a worthwhile addition to his toolbox?
