I know this must have been asked a thousand times, but can someone give me a bit of local gen ?

Three/four of us are debating whether to do the west coast of Ireland or possibly west coast of Scotland for a week or so starting 2 nd week of June.

Scotland was favourite but not sure I can be bothered with bloody midges.

So,if we come over your way,how far round is it worth going in about a week ?

We would most likely get the ferry to Rosslare, stop in Kinsale for the night and then head down and around Beara/Dingle and round and up to Bunratty-I know it's a tourist trap but I went to Durty Nellys 20 years a go when I joined the airline and would love to pop back for a pint or two.

So after that how far is it worth going ?

All the way past Sligo towards Derry etc ?

We would just do it on the hoof and stop each day when ready to-would this be a problem trying to get 3 rooms adhoc without prior booking?

Thanks people, and apologies for asking what must have been asked a million times.

I did have a look in the section but spent an hour without finding specific info.

If anybody has done a similar trip and has a gdb file for Mapsource that would be even better.

I would love to just follow my nose,if we go,but sod's law we would miss something that some tosser on here would mention after our return !!
Ta.

Download the route in the west cork run thread, try it out.

Plus If I were you I would swap the ring of Kerry out for the Mizzen Head, simply for less traffic...

What bikes are you on???

Lastly remember to stay on the ends of the peninsula rather than in the big places like Bantry or Kilarney, I can arrange BandB if you fancy a night in Allihies... And Crookhaven is a great place too:beer:

Thanks Richie.

I'd be on my KTM 950SE and the others all on GSA12s.

Sorry for ignorance, but which bit is Ring of Kerry ?

The middle one of the three in your route, but I reckon the two below are a better bet, plus of course the Beara, BTW the top one in your route, Dingle is very nice at the very end, and you could go North over the Connor pass from Dingle (town) which is a great road..

If you're in the Dingle peninsula call in to this restuarant............
some nice fish dishes..................wine too!!!!

Just done a route for you...

Richie,

Thanks so much-that is absolutely brilliant.

Ref accomodation,do you think it will be busy in 2nd week of June or would we be ok just turning up and staying somewhere each night ?

We normally book ahead so it would be nice to be not tied to a deadline each day.

Can you recommend a a couple of possible options along the route with suitable places for bike parking and possibly next to/attached to a good watering hole ?

It's probably a bit corny, but I still have visions of great little pubs with live music each night after a great day on the bike.

Thanks everybody else for all the advice.

This forum really is great for stuff like this.

:clap

You definitely do not need to book ahead as June is early for Irish tourism...

As for places to stay with safe parking, if you stay in villages you won't need safe parking and could probably get away with leaving the keys in the bike:augie

On that route you could stay in Crookhaven, Allihies and Dingle... I cannot recommend a BandB in Crookhaven as I have never stayed there, but know its a great place as I have been many times.
Allihies , Veronicas BandB was appreciated by a few last week. And I just happen to know another Veronica in Dingle who runs BandB too. So could pass on the details for those two places...

PS ... When you get to Allihies, can I have a go on your Katoom....:eek

Thanks again.

I may even be on my own as the other guys are still possibly going to France/Spain as originally planned.

You can certainly have a go on the SE.

It's even bloody taller now with the Renazco seat,as it's wider then the OE seat.

I'm 6'1" and can tip toe it

Arsey

I can recommend http://www.galleycovehouse.com/ for a B&B in Crookhaven and you'll get great grub in the bar at the harbour in Crookhaven itself. Beautiful country.

V

good man Paul, he is all sorted...:thumb

BTW if Arsey does end up being on his own, I will try and take a day out of my spectacularly busy schedule to go out with him....

Great stuff,again.

Looks like a plan is coming together !

I've just noticed that the dates are the same as The Clanning of the Haggis Munchers up in Ullapool.

And one of the other boys would rather head north so we may be going up there instead.

I'd rather do this but have done enough solos trips,so if drinking buddies want to go to Scotland,I may have to put this on hold again-seem to recall same happened last time I tried to get over to Ireland.

So if this gets postponed this time, thanks for all the advice today-It's stored and will be used as soon as I can get down
