Hi,

In continuation of the mattress questions:

What is the best car for a person with lower back issues?
Or to put it another way, what car has the best seats for the above?

Depends on who you talk to.

I find my Volvo S60 to be superb and many others rate Volvo seats in general.

I do however know a guy with serious lumbar problems. He drove Saab for years. Fancied a change and bought BMW, top rate 5 series. He had to change it within months due to his back and went straight back to Saab.

I have to agree I had a Saab and now have a BMW 5 and if I could switch the seats I would.

Don't think about Renault, I had to trade my Scenic as the seats was completely uncomfortable for driver and passenger.
The Skoda Octavia is good, but could do better.
Have a look at the Back Shop in Exchequer Street, Dublin for a possible solution.

I have serious lower back trouble and the best thing about the seats in my A6 for my back is the fact that the seats are heated. As heat into the muscles does wonders for any pain, this is great on long journeys in particular.

+1 We have the A6 avant with leather heated seats, 16 hour 940 mile comfortable.

Have to agree with the Volvo option I suffered severe lower back pain through driving too much on crap seats ,changed to Volvo,absolutely superb. If you dont want to chase about look at an S80 ,very under rated and very cheap secondhand buy.

We had a Mercedes 'A' Class before and despite it having loads of adjustable seat controls, none of them made the slightest difference. It was bloody uncomfortable.

We've now got a Volvo V50 and it's comfort personified.

I find the Vauxhall seats to be the most uncomfortable on the planet and give me a sore hip within minutes which lasts weeks before it goes away,

The Ford Focus, I find very comfy has a variable lumbar support which is good, depending on the type of driving you do or if your backs giving you a bit of jip on a certain day

The Mondeo I don't find particularly comfy.

Citreon/Peugeots tend to have comfy seats

If you can afford it, it maybe worth hiring different cars and see how you get on with then, I find cars seats can be a very personel thing and the above may not work for you.

I have to say my Renault Scenic (54 plate) is brilliant, I had a prolapsed disc in 2000 and can drive this alll day no problem. Drove to Black Forrest on holiday great.

I also like the fact that you dont drop into the car like normal saloon cars, the higher seating position really helps.

Suffered for many years with back problems, after having surgery my physio recommended german made cars. He said they offered better lumbar support. I was driving a fiat uno at the time. I bought a vw polo, then a skoda fabia. I've never looked back pardon the pun. I drive a bmw 118 now still no problems.

I /We find that the C Max is a great bad back car
We used to be called mr and mrs glassback
Janet my wife has just had back surgery and the fact that the car is slightly higher helps no end
The car also has lumber pushouts on the drivers side = if you get the top version its on both sides

Bad back driving if still though all about posture
sit up straights as you dare get up to the wheel and on long journeys put a cushion or summat on yer outside of yer right knee to keep it all straighter up
if yer follow
Also people still dont get into cars properly - get yer arse on the seat then bring yer legs in

posture be up and straight = thats why folk dont moan as much whilst ridin yer GS style of bikes

Try and get one with electric seat adjustment too, my V70 has it and the little adjustments you can do to the seat while driving helps loads for your comfort.

V70 with heated leather seats

I have a V70 with heated leather seats. We did 1200km one day from Roscoff to south of Perpignan, all in total comfort. I would also recommend an automatic gearbox, takes away lots of strain in town.

Hey Bin,

Check out the back belt in this link. I have had one since I had a car accident 6 years ago and can not recommend them enough. It is fantastic when on the bike and even just around the house or in work you can were it under clothes and it gives brilliant support to the lower back.

For me, and I suffer a lot with lower back pain, I found the VW Touareg to be the most perfect car seat ever. We regularly drove to Geneva overnight and it was comfortable after 12 hours.

But for me the electric seat was unbearable on a test drive. The manual seat was much better.

And now, it's my better half's turn to buy the car and he chose .................................Porsche Boxster..............which I could never say was comfortable......but wouldn't change it for the world............sometimes one has to go for speed over comfort

Hi Bin,

the Sunday Times had a mention yesterday about an heated massaging seat cover thingy that goes over the seat and back of a car seat for €23 and refers us to the Maplins website (maplin.co.uk) but a search says this item is out of stock.

Anyway, I was in their shop in Jervis St today and they had heated ones (not massaging mind) for €16.95. Two heat settings and plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Might do until you get sorted with something fancier.

PS - thought my luck was in when I saw a stand with heated vests and heated gloves at good prices, but alas, they are battery powered.
