Seemingly, BMW large bevel bearing isnt the best quality available. C3 quality. The best being C1

This link should take you to a bearing of the best quality apparently.

Information stolen from someone on the Grinnall forum, so dont blame me if its nonsense.

That's very interesting info, if it proves to be the best for a GS this should be a sticky:)

What .... me ..... getting a sticky !!! after 10 years ???

Its ...its ... like Andy Murray gettin to the final.

I'm goin to open a bottle of wine in anticipation.

You'd expect that to be even more important on a Grinnall, wouldn't you...? The side loadings on the bearing will be greater in a car.

Seems the C value isn't about quality, its about internal clearances, changing to a tighter clearance bearing may not be the best idea but I'm open to ideas :nenau

Bearings having an internal clearance other than Normal are identified by the suffixes C1 to C5

Suffix - Radial internal clearance
C1 - Less than C2
C2 - Less than Normal
CN - Normal
C3 - Greater than Normal
C4 - Greater than C3
C5 - Greater than C4

so if they are wearing out prematurely - ithey are either overloaded or they are overheating and binding up - so maybe a C4 should be used in the first place ? :nenau

Ps I bet u know all the other 5 members on the grinall forum by first names :D

You're confusing quality with purpose of use.

C3 is used for a reason.

There was an article on the AdvRiders site that talks about a better bearing that can take a side load, because BMW standard final drive bearings cannot apparently. I'm no expert, but there was a good discussion, about it when I was doing my research.

Well the same bearing has been used in the final drives since 1984, on the K series bikes. And problems were unheard of.

I doubt it's the bearing, It's more likely the quality control or the man doing the shimming being rushed due to pressure from the increase in sales :D

What the hell is this thread for.
It is not the quality, it is the purpose.

C3 is for high temperature clearance bearings and Steptoe and I and everybody else knows it, who understands something about BMW final drives.
BMW factory knows it as well and that is why they have been using C3 for ages.

Well fuck me roughly with a muddy stick. I was only passing on information for anyone' in the know' to comment on. Thought that was what forums were for.
Read what I said on the first post ........ then go fuck yourself. I'll lend you my stick.

Mutta c1 laakeri on parempilaatuista kuin c3. Onko sen paremmin tarkoitukseen, en tiedä..

By the way ........ Tiedättekö mitään van mainonnasta?

Mutta c1 laakeri on parempilaatuista kuin c3. Onko sen paremmin tarkoitukseen, en tiedä. Niin minä sanoin.

By the way ........

Kiitos mielenkiintoisesta keskustelusta
Hyvää yötä.
Menen nyt nukkumaan. Kello on 2.35 keskellä yötä täällä Helsingissä Suomessa.

terveisin

Että kaikki hyvin. Luotan esimiehen tietoon.

C3 turvallisin johtuu lämpölaajenemisesta Se huolestuttaa minua, kun he sanoivat

"sopimaton jossa critcial yhdenmukaistaminen vaaditaan alusta alkaen!"
