Going off EXP's, the rear on my Tenere is at just over 2mm with just under 2.5k on the clock, can't see it making 3.5k at this rate

That is odd. Put a new pair on just before my last 2500 euro trip in July and still masses left for another trip to Europe in sept.
Now with about 3000 miles. Rear has some signs of squaring off but easily 6mm left.

Just fitted a second pair of Tourance EXP's.
First pair had done 5000 miles and the rear is down to about 1.5mm. Going to Italy at the end of the month (approx 3000 mile round trip) so fitted a new pair.
Originally had Trail Attacks on from new, they were OK, no problems with them. Had the firsty pair of EXP's put on just before my my 6000 mile service and have been very happy with them in both wet & dry conditions.
All mileage done on roads, no off-road stufff.

As said before, try the Dunlop TR91. Very good tyre in the wet or dry and cheaper than the competition that will even let you go off road, that is gravel roads but not tried in the mud or technical sections. To me it seems to have the same wear rate as the Tourance EXP but not as bad as what Rasher is experiencing now. I should get about 6 -7k out of them. I'm taking the GSA to Snetterton on Monday so will see how they do. Overall a good tyre for general road use. Gets my vote above all the other tyres I have tried like Battlewings and Tourance EXP.
Mind you, the newer trail styled tyres for the GS type bikes should all be very good. Pick a set and get it fitted. If you don't like it you can always wear them out before winter and try another tyre. That'll be £190 to £250 a set (estimated so add the difference if more) fitted plus 7000mls at about 45mpg with fuel at 132p/l should give you max £1180.16 till replacement. Interesting.

I find the tourances, particularlyEXP's give surprisingly low mileage !
Haven't quite clocked 9k miles yet, & I'm off to have my 3rd rear fitted to my GSA later today. The first EXP lasted 3.5K, then I had a standard tourance fitted, as I was told they are a harder compound, which, to be fair, has lasted 5.5k . Both have been good tyres with no real grip issues though
Next time, when it'll need a full set, I'm going to try PR3's - which I find are excellent on my Fazer 1000 & are second to none in the wet, so should be good for this winter

My Tourance Exp's have 3mm tread left and are 11,000 miles young.
My rear EXP lasted 3,600 miles - will not be buying another 
Chucked on a part worn Trail Attack and no adverse effects with EXP front so will run that for now and try some PR3's next time

Got these fitted on my 3x black and they are a top tyre and I can have major fun on these and have no chicken strips on the rear and only 20mm strips left on the front
and have been on tour fully loaded and the tyres have lost no shape at 2500 miles so would expect a good 6000 and their good in all weathers but @£250 fitted I would love car mileage but my bikes there to be ridden not preserved

Tourance Exps since new on my R1200GS.
The first rear tyre was replaced at just over 8,000 miles because of a puncture. There was still lots of tread but it was starting to square off.
The current rear has done just over 9,000 miles. Still plenty of tread but squaring off a bit.
The front tyre was replaced at just over 11,000 miles because it had a few cracks. The current tyre is still fine with lots of miles left in it.

This is my personal experience of tyres on the GS:
Tourance lasted 7300 miles Very good
Battlax 020 lasted 6300 miles no better than Tourance for grip
Road Attacks lasted 7100 miles not as good as above
Battlewings lasted 7200 miles not as good as tourances
Roadsmarts lasted 7000 miles great to start with, squared off quickly
Pilot Road 3's currently 4000 miles. Love 'em. Loads of grip wet or dry and haven't squared off yet, my favourite and highly recommended.

Such a vast difference in wear. I have had several Tourances and one Exp rear. I get 11k from a rear and 21k (yes 21k) from a front. The EXP gave me about 7k. I have ridden on Annakes and didn't like them as they felt very unstable especially the front. But it is down to personal preference. I have noticed the it is getting harder to find Tourances and they my local fitters are now charging more for them than EXPs, most strange.
I have had Tourances for ages and when I got my DOHC R1200 GS I thought lets change and see how the Battlewings fair. What a smack in the gob and ass twitching decision that was, deffo going back to tourances now.
BW are very twitchy in the wet unlike the tourances where it dont matter what the weather is doing and I hated the way they turned into corners. Bike has done at most 3.5k and they are very near the limit, to be fair though did a lot of miles in bonnie Scotland but even still. ..... it's a great world and we are all different.
So the answer to the OP is..... the best tyre for you is the best tyre for you...... it's a great world and we are all different.

I just switched to Tourances and have 2,000 miles on them now. Great tyre. Had Battlewings that used to skip in the wet. Love me Tourances.
