experiencing a low bottom end knock on startup on a 1150 GSA (04) with 14k mileage.:spitfire I have just put in 20w50 which has helped, as I think the previous owner had 10w40 in. Cold morning start up seems to be quiter /OK but once the engine is hot the knock always is there on start up if only for a couple of turns...then goes away immediately

The hot oil seems to be draining back for some reason? For an engine of this age I would not expect to get this fledgling sympton of something potentially more serious to come...

Bike always on centre stand when started.

Help please...

Sold to the man who offered me £50...:bounce1

I upgraded the Cam chain tensioner on my old 1100RT (Y reg) on the downward pointing side (left from memory)and foolishly though BMW might have included the mod upgrade by 2004, but obviously no....

its only C£60 is to replace this so Ill do it to see what happens......However this is a deep knock at botom end not a small end / cam higher knock....Not sure how they are related.....please expand a little...

Cheers All and thankx for the reassurance....which I kind new already... honest...
Any other offers on the bike please beware as I might accept...:hug

Cabby, the knock when hot sounds pretty bad like a big end, my 1200 is also better with 20W50 but still clatters on a hot start. So long as it doesn't clatter once under load from the bottom end, and your oil pressure warning light stays off, don't panic about it. Like Bryn says "they all do that"

For £60 it's worth replacing that tensioner.

knocks

Seriously I don't think theres any thing to worry about the noises these things make frightens one, but just use earplugs and they keep going. If it was an end give it a good blip on the stand and on the over run running down you would hear it. So don't worry, if you getting paranoid my £51 offer still stands!.
